F St HostelBest of IgoUgo

Hotel

Salt Lake's only hostel puts the Traveler's Aid back in YHA. A grotty, but altogether friendly place within walking distance of downtown, the F St. hostel is located in Salt Lake's Greenwich Village, the Avenues. The place could use an overhaul, but unless you prefer a cheap motel in the industrial quarter, this is the cheapest flop in town.

B & D BurgerBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "B & D Burger"

This off-campus burger joint serves a fantastic, charbroiled burger and honest to God chocolate malts. The place is hopping with college students and high school girls at lunch, especially on Tuesdays when burgers are 99 cents. At night it's a bit more mellow when the washed out engineering students roll in. Try the avocado burger and the chicken gyro.

Murphy's Bar & GrillBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Murphy's"

Scum and fun abound at this downtown, step-down "private club," which means "thou can smoke here" in Utahese. The Long Island Iced Tea here may be the only stiff drink in the state, though be wary: enough of these and you'll find yourself in a tepee in the foothills with a local girl named Emmanuel. Don't fight the bouncer--he'll split your head open.

Farmers MarketBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Farmer's Market"

Weekly summer market draws smaller scale farmers out of the country side to cater to the desire of locals to eat food that's not built in Detroit. The morning crowds milling among bins of chiles and green apples in this central city park reminded me why free market was ever a good idea. Come on Saturday in the summer as soon as you wake up.

Sam Weller's BooksBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

This is the best bookstore between New York and San Francisco. Sam Weller set up shop decades ago in this fantastic downtown garrison of mildew and rotting print. A new expansion into the adjoining basement has provided additional acres of shelving for used books. Prices are good for used and rare books, and the store offers a matchless collection of Mormon and Utah arcana. A great place to while away the hours.
