A March 2003 trip to Fort Lauderdale by Mexwin

Quote: I had an oppurtunity to combine business with pleasure in my trip to Fort Lauderdale.

Fort Lauderdale and vicinity

We checked out three beaches: Ft. Lauderdale, Hollywood, and South Miami. By far South Beach is the best with nice sand and clear water. Next time we will travel further south into the Keys.

Quick Tips:

In other places we have visited it was important to have the hotel on the beach. That really is not the case in SE Florida. All central point for all activities is more important.

Best Way To Get Around:

Only way to get around is by car. Best rates can be had online with rental car company promotions about one or two months before you need the rental. Last minute deals are better, but are subject to availability.
Best Things Nearby:Golfing, choice of beaches, Sawgrass Mills outlet mall, EvergladesBest Things About the Resort:Nice pool, good room layouts.Resort Experience:If you arrive at night make sure you have good driving instructions. The streets are poorly lit and the reception area is not that well-marked. We got a one bedroom "B" unit. "B" units are slightly smaller than "A" units but fine for two adults and two kids.If you're deciding between staying at Weston or staying at Buenaventura, choose Weston. The pool at Weston is much nicer. Lots of shopping in the area including Sawgrass Mills outlet mall, which is just plain huge. The beaches are a half hour to ...Read More

South Beach

Clear water, clean and soft sand, and great looking people. The beach is huge. It is definitely worth a days visit if you are in the area. The art deco buildings are certainly unique, with great restaurants and bars. Visit Mango's for lively dining with bartenders getting up on the bars once every half hour for some butt shaking.

Everglades National Park

Attraction | "Everglades airboats"

The are a lot of airboat companies to choose from throughout the Everglades. Vacation Villages at Weston has a half price deal ($8 each) with one 10 minutes from the resort. A bus is offered for free, but we chose to go on our own. The airboat is covered and large, fitting 20 people. The ride starts with a trip to a ridiculous Indian village (just a tourist trap) for a five minute alligator wrestling show. Mildly interesting. The airboat ride continues with a lot of environmental information being offered by the boat captain. We saw a few alligators and a ton of birds. Don't spend more than $10 for these tours.
