Romantic San Diego

A February 2003 trip to San Diego by Ron148

San Diego has it all. The ocean, mountains, desert, and tons of things to satisfy everyones interests. My romantic vacation included a harbor dinner cruise, excellent dining and entertainment in the historical Gaslamp District, and sightseeing.

The highlight of our trip was enjoying the beautiful weather and getting out of the snow. San Diego has something for everyone. I recommend checking out all the activities in Balboa Park, including many cultural activities and the world-famous zoo. But only in San Diego can a world-famous zoo be upstaged by their Wild Animal Park, which consists of a large compound with animals in their natural setting. Unlike most zoos, you travel to see them on a tram. This is located 30 minutes north of downtown and well worth the trip.

Staying downtown has so many benefits, including enjoying the variety of entertainment and dining in the historic Gaslamp District. Speaking of dining, don't miss an evening harbor dinner cruise.

Quick Tips:

The only suggestion I have is don't take a late flight into San Diego. Since the airport is downtown, flights end at 11pm. Our flight landed shortly before this and we just barely got to the car rental agency before they closed.

Best Way To Get Around:

The best way to get around San Diego is by car. The freeways are conveniently located, so navigating around the city with a map is a snap. All area attractions are easily accessed and the highway signs aid in directing you to your destination. There is so much to do, so don't miss out on anything by being limited by transportation. Don't miss out on the harbor walk, it's worth the effort and great exercise.

Best Things Nearby:
The Gaslamp Plaza Suites is located in the historical Gaslamp District in Downtown San Diego. This historical area has just about anything you are looking for in both entertainment and dining.

Best Things About the Resort:
The location gave us so many options for sightseeing, dining, and entertainment. It is conveniently located to the freeways, so all area attractions are easily accessed. The Gaslamp Plaza Suites has a nice breakfast and a roof-top hot tub to relax in at the end of a great day.

Resort Experience:
The Gaslamp Plaza Suite is a historical building which is nicely preserved and well maintained. The units are in excellent condition. They only have a partial kitchen, which includes a small refrigerator and microwave oven. This was a drawback, because I like to have an ice-cream snack from the freezer at night. Another drawback is that parking is a problem and expensive at $18 per day. But, it was all worth it. Nothing is better than having an enjoyable day sightseeing, followed by an evening of dinner and entertainment and then a dip in the hot tub on the roof to relax. This is a great place for a romantic getaway, but would be somewhat limiting for a family with children.

Restaurant | "Anthony''s Fish Grotto"

Anthony''s has great seafood and something for every budget. You can enjoy their formal dining room inside or a casual meal on their deck. We went casual and enjoyed a great fish dinner on the deck, but the seafood platter is always tempting too.

Besides the great food, the scenery is the best. Anthony''s is located on a pier extending into the San Diego Harbor, so you can enjoy both the great food and the exceptional scenery.
