The Texas wildflower season is upon us! We went off in search of photo ops and country vistas, barbecue, and four-star pie.

The highlights of going on a country drive are the scenic routes. These roads are marked by brown signs and will lead you to some of the prettiest parts of central Texas.

Quick Tips:

Many shops and restaurants are closed on Mondays (probably due to a rollicking weekend). Go on a Thursday or Friday and places will be open, but you will still avoid massive crowds of antiquers.

Best Way To Get Around:

You will need your own set of wheels for a country drive.

After locating the two restaurants that we had heard of in Brenham, and finding that both Texas BBQ and A Moment in Time Teahouse were closed on Mondays, we settled for Texas's Grill. The sign boasted "the best hamburgers in Brenham," and the one employee who was operating as waiter, bartender, cook, and host served some great hamburgers very quickly. He was out of pie, but offered us some disc-shaped ice cream confabulations--a new product on the market called "Fidagos." Although we were really looking for some barbecue and prize-winning pie, Texas's Grill was a lucky find.

Roundtop, Texas is famous for two things: the miles and miles of antiques you can browse for on weekends, and the estate of the Roundtop Festival, where musicians flock from all over the world during the summer. If you are in the area, you must check out the grounds of the Roundtop Festival. The gardens and stonework offer a nice break from driving, and also yield some stunning photo opportunities. Only 20 miles from Brenham, Roundtop is small, and if you follow the main drag through town you won't have trouble finding the festival grounds.
