If you like architecture Split is a great place to visit. The highlight being the historic Diocletian's palace in the old centre of town.

Wandering around the Diocletian's Palace, watching the sunset on the waterfront, drinking homemade lemonade with the locals in their home and chatting with them about what they think of the rest of the world (which to them is just America).

Quick Tips:

The main train station is right on the waterfront and pretty near to the old historic centre. When you get off the train apparently, you will be bombarded with women offering private rooms. I have heard really good and bad stories about the resulting experiences. If you want to go somewhere that has been checked out head to the travel agency just down the street who will fix you up with a room at only a slightly higher price. The agency is at Kraj S. Ivana 11.

Best Way To Get Around:

We had hired a car which was rather nightmarish, because the outer city is quite big but there are lots of one way streets. You can't take a car into the historic centre anyway. Once we parked the car in a gym parking lot (which we told was allowed) walking was a great way to get around the old city and allowed us to discover lots of tiny back streets.

This guesthouse has five double rooms with showers and toilets in the hall. The rooms are spacious and comfortable without being luxurious. Heaters are provided in the rooms. The accomodation was very clean and the facilities were in good condition. Unfortunately the hot water tank wasn't very big meaning that there was only enough hot water for two normal length showers.

As it we were there in the off season, we had the place to ourselves, which was nice. The accommodation is incredibly close to town, but can be rather difficult to find. If you ring from near the old town, the owner will come and meet you. We paid about 13 euro each, which didn't seem too bad, although I have been told that it is possible to do better.

The best part about staying here was that the owner, who still lives with his parents, invited us upstairs to his place to drink homemade lemonade and eat pumpkin seeds. It was really interesting, especially when two of his friends, who were bodybuilding twins, turned up. If it is experiences you are after, this is a great place.

The reason that I haven't given this place highly recommended is that for Croatian standards, it is somewhat overpriced.
