Windsor for a Weekend

An April 2002 trip to Windsor by BrandyPantz

Just a quick trip because we had never seen Canada. When we arrived and saw all the kids, we knew we were in for a treat!

Windsor was a hot spot for teens due to the lowered age limit for drinking (19) and also how close it is to the States. There are great casinos and also a lot of culture is to be found here!

Windsor is supposedly the "slums" of Ontario, but it looked great! The air was clean and it was almost comparable to a big city here.

Aside from the casinos they also have a huge mall and lots of nice restaurants. It definitely has a lot for people to do!

Quick Tips:

Make sure you have a plan when you get to customs... they were suspicious of us because we didn't know where we were staying or how long we would be there. (You drove 6 hours and you dont have a place to stay?) If you have something to tell them they won't be as suspicious of you and you'll be able to get through quickly! Also dont try to stay at the Travellodge or anyother name brand hotel chain becuase you will pay a ton! We stayed at a regualr mom and pop place. It was for the night. the bathroom was HUGE and it was fine. It even had cable. :)

Best Way To Get Around:

It's very easy to find your way when driving. We drove everywhere and didn't really get lost!

Restaurant

We had to stop at the McDonalds just to see the differences from the standard chains from the states. There were a lot of differences!

They had this strange dish called Poutine - Fries with Cheese Curd and Gravy. Of course we had to try it - it wasn't too bad but I haven't really craved it since then!

There were no apple pies, instead they had blueberry and the Happy Meals came with nutritional snacks instead of toys (yogurt, fruit snacks, or granola bars).

The packages were neat because they were in french and also english. Certain things like the nuggets came in wax bags instead of boxes and they had mayonnaise on tap and in packets instead of ketchup.

This is just a little thing that's pretty interesting and also a cheap thrill!

This casino is very high class for sure! They had Valet Parking, and when you sat in the restaurant for awhile and have food left on your plate they offer to reheat it!

Make sure you bring lots of single dollars because you will be tipping out the wazoo!

We mostly enjoyed the slots - hit it big a few times but since we aren't serious gamblers we simply blew the rest.

The Casino was very beautiful - very Vegas like with lots of bright lights and multiple floors. Make sure you have two forms of ID or else you won't be allowed in!

Best thing about this place is it's open 24 hours a day and it's the only place in the area where you can purchase alcohol. And the bars have limited hours (I think they close at like 3am and open again at 11am) and the bartenders are excellent!

This is a MUST if you're in Windsor!

This place wasn't near as nice as the Windsor Casino. You park in a huge parking lot and the staff was a little rude.

They almost didn't except his ID because it was taken different than other ID's (in Maryland they take a side profile shot until you're 21). So after some complaining and whining they finally let us in.

The nickel slots were confusing and didn't pay out a lot, but they were still fun.

The bartender made the best Long Island Iced Tea ever, but I think she slacked off on the alcohol since she knew we were under 21 and she probably thought we were there just to drink.

The horses weren't running that day, so unless you really like seeing different casinos or the horses are running you could probably skip this one!

We did this after we tired of the casinos. It was a nice change. They had a dollar store which had a lot of nice gifts at a good price. We mainly checked out the clothing stores. There were a lot of places that we don't have. Most of them were themed (they had a whole store for skaters that carried the clothes as well as boards) and offered everything you could think of.

If you're a shopper I would recommend stopping by here to check it out! Just remember that even though it sounds expensive, it's about the same that you'd pay here! :)
