Enjoying Rome

Overview

Quote:
The highlights of Rome included seeing the Colosseo, the Forum, Trevi Fountain, and especially the Vatican. I was really blown away seeing the Vatican-- was so impressive. Also, seeing the Pope didn't hurt the trip either.Quick Tips: The Pope does his weekly blessing on Wednesday mornings. Normally you have to make reservations in advance to see him, but since we went in the off season (January) we showed up early and got tickets. Seeing Rome in January was great. There were no lines to get in anywhere which made everything so relaxing!Best Way To Get Around: We walked a lot and used the subway. The subway is easy enough--the machines to buy the tickets might not work, or will only ...Read More

The hotel is quite nice. We got a room with a balcony overlooking Via Veneto, which was such a lovely view. The rooms were normal size for Europe (small) but they were nicely furnished and had a marble bath. They even had towel warmers. Breakfast in the morning was pretty good. Close to the Spanish Steps, so it was centrally located and right near the subway, so it's easy to get around from there.

We were so lucky to see the Pope. The Pope gives a weekly blessing every Wednesday morning. Normally, you have to send a letter in for tickets and you have to do that quite early. Since it was January, we got to the Vatican and asked for tickets when they start giving out the same day tickets (if any are available) when they opened at 8:30am. After a few questions, they gave us tickets. We were so thrilled! Seeing the Pope was just amazing - it is hard to explain in words. There was so much love and everyone singing and smiling. He did his blessing in about six different languages (Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, English, and French). It was an experience that really made the trip and I am n...Read More

The Colosseum/Coliseum

Attraction | "Colosseum"

Quote:
I couldn't wait to see the Colosseum. It was amazing. I have seen so many pictures of the outside, but had never seen many of the inside. I was surprised when I walked in that the whole floor of the Colosseum wasn't a dirt ground - it had sections underneath where they had a wooden flooring. We sat for a while, taking the whole scene in, trying to picture what happened there. We did the Forum first, and then saw the Colosseum.

It was a really nice day, even for January, so after visiting the Vatican for the day, we walked over to the Piazza Navona. Many artists try to sell their paintings there. Many are quite nice. We had a coffee at one of the outdoor cafes there. It was a nice, peaceful place to spend a late afternoon.

Vatican

Attraction | "Amazing Vatican"

Quote:
The Vatican was amazing. From the minute we walked into San Piedro square, we stood there with our jaws dropped, just amazed at the sight of it all. The St. Peter's Basilica was huge and inside was just stunning. We spent a lot of time there. They still had a Christmas tree in the center of the square in late January.

Sistine Chapel

Attraction | "Finally seeing the Sistine Chapel"

Quote:
The Sistine Chapel was a wonder. It is amazing to stand there and think that Michelangelo spent seven years painting the whole ceiling. We didn't look at the times that the Sistine Chapel was open, and found out to our dismay that it was only open in the morning hours. So we had to come back. So, I'd suggest seeing that first and then seeing the rest of the Vatican afterwards.
