Southern Getaway in March 2003

A January 2003 trip to Myrtle Beach by Marjoe

This was our first trip traveling through the world of RCI. We traveled to Myrtle Beach about eight years ago and found many changes had taken place while we were away. What a great place to find some warmer weather at this time of year!

Resort Experience:
The unit we stayed in was older, but very well kept. The unit was very nicely decorated and had a full kitchen. It was very roomy. It had a large Jacuzzi tub and a queen size bed in the separate bedroom. There was also a pull out queen size bed in the living/dining room. It could accommodate 4 adults, however, we found it just right for a couple.

Sea Captains House RestaurantBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Sea Captain's House"

This restaurant was recommended to us by the resort we stayed at which was within 2 blocks walking dstance. The restaurant has a lovely waiting area where you can enjoy a drink while waiting for your table. Plenty of comfortable chairs are there to sit by the fireplace and even an ovesized chess board to test your skills if you want.

The dining area is a glassed in area with a beautiful view of the ocean to enjoy during your dinner. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. This was where we spent our first night for dinner and was well worth it.

This was a great place to go for good homestyle cooking, where breakfast, lunches, and dinner were all a reasonable price. The service was quick and friendly and the atmosphere was very comfortable.

Attraction | "Old Historic Charleston"

The tour takes an entire day. They picked us up right outside our resort and dropped us off there again at the end of the day. The tour included a 75 minute city tour of Charleston, lunch, free time in the old part of the city, including time in the open market, and access to the Aiken-Rhett Mansion and Urban Plantation grounds.

Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country ClubBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club"

This golf course is located just over the stateline in North Carolina. It took us about 45 minutes to drive there from the heart of Myrtle Beach. It appeared to be a newer course with fairly open fairways that were forgiving for a golfer with a higher handicap (me) but the course still had challenges for a better golfer (my husband). Each of the 9s have their own set of challenges--from lots of water on the Bay 9 to just a little on the Sand 9. Because we played in the early spring (first week of March), carts were restricted to the cart path only and there was still some standing water on the fairway. All in all, we found it a very enjoyable place to play our first round of golf for the season.

This is a destination with something for everyone--shopping, restaurants, movies, an aquarium, shows, etc. It is a huge complex with easy access from the Hwy. 17 by-pass. Several chain-type restaurants including the Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood are located in this area. Nightclubs such as Club Kryptonite can be found here as well. Other attractions include Ripley's Aquarium, the butterfly pavillion, and mini golf. You could come back here every day and find a new place to eat and something new to do.
