A Mountain For All Seasons

A March 2003 trip to Mont Tremblant by funny anglo

Known by the locals simply as Tremblant, this world class resort offers four-season activities for families, singles, spring breakers, and those looking to be at one with nature.

The mountain is one of the highest peaks in Quebec, providing extensive ski trails (92 and more to come) that attract skiers from all over the world. In the summer the ski runs turn into hiking trails, suitable for all levels. The village resort is full of stores carrying sports clothing to native soapstone sculpture, making for great shopping (though sometimes pricey), and there is a pool complex with indoor and outdoor pools and Jacuzzis. Nearby is the town of Saint-Jovite, full of good restaurants and unique stores.

Quick Tips:

Make hotel reservations in advance if possible, especially if you are going during any long weekend/Christmas holidays/Spring Break. Generally spring break lasts from the third week of February to the second week of March. The reason it can’t be pinned down to one week is because each school system and province/country has a different spring break week (Canadian schools in February, American schools in March). If you are not looking for a lift ticket and hotel package try booking a hotel through a web site like Travelocity, Expedia or directly with the hotel of your choice: you will avoid archaic rules such as minimum two night stay, and the rates may be better than what the central Tremblant reservation system quotes you.

Best Way To Get Around:

If you are staying in the village resort you don’t need transportation, everything is located within walking distance. If you are staying in Saint-Jovite or in the town of Mont Tremblant there is a shuttle service that operates daily, check at the mountain for the schedule and bus stops.
I stayed at the Fairmont Tremblant in November 2002. We had a cozy room with an extremely comfortable down duvet, large marble bathroom, and a view of the mountain and village. One of the main reasons we chose the Fairmont was for its three outdoor Jacuzzis, a warm and special treat after a day of attempting to hike to the top of Mont Tremblant!

The Fairmont is a good luxury choice if money is not a concern to you; the staff provides efficient and quick service, and small details such as bathrobes in each room are not overlooked. The high season prices are considerably higher than what we paid. Normally this hotel charges $225 and up per night, but we stayed in low season and paid $150 CAD. Try to book directly with Fairmont either throught their web site or toll-free number, you can find specials not advertised through the Tremblant main reservations center and you can avoid the two night stay rule imposed during high season.
