Bruges Daytrip from Amsterdam

Overview

I took a quick peek in the chapel at the Beginhof and strolled around the tiny houses. There was a wonderful nativity scene (as it was just after Xmas) with figurines that must have been pretty old. Cheap shopping compared to the rest of Western Europe. I bought a warm ski jacket for 29 euros on the main shopping street to the market square. Also delicious chocolates bon bons are their specialty. Try The Chocolate Shop for their delicious chocolates that come in quaint purple boxes and ribbons. There's also a wonderful Groeninge Museum housed in a 600 year old building. Have afternoon tea or in this case, a tasse of hot choclate with a Belgian waffe topped with fresh whipped cream. We stopped off at the panekoeken house (the pancake house) and had lunch. Pancakes are a Dutch and Flemish specialty. There are a variety of filled or plain pancakes, savory and sweet. I had a spinach and fish pancake, and my friend had ham and cheese. It was delicious. We topped it off with two cups of chocomel (a european Hershey's type choclate drink but way better). It came with heaps of fresh whipped cream and little cups of hot butterscotch rum to be mixed in w/ the hot chocolate. The total bill for 2 people was about 30 euro.

Climb up to the Belry to get a view of the square. The entry fee is a little pricey, about 5 Euro, but it's nice to take pictures up there and to get a layout of the town.

At Christmas there's a small ice-skating rink and the picturesque houses are wrapped in lights. Alternatively, go up around sunset (it closes at 4:15) and take pics of the square.

Car from Amsterdam

Story/Tip

Quote:
We rented a Ford Focus for 9 Euro (not including gas/mileage) from easycar.com from Amsterdam and it took us about 4 hours to get to Bruges. The best thing is to go in the morning, stop off in Ghent if you have time to look at the sights, but Bruges is much more accessible by foot.
