A February 2003 trip to Pompano Beach by g.cookie

Boy, were we ready for this trip! We went from temperatures at below 0 to temps in the high 80s--we loved every day of it. It rained a little on a couple of the days, but everyone told us it wouldn't last, and they were right.

Overview

The best thing was being on the beach and stepping from our room into the water. It was a relaxing vacation for us from the cold.

Quick Tips:

The condo we stayed at is on a streach of condos and hotels and there are not many places near to eat. We found ourselves eating some of our breakfasts in, as choices were slim. I also found out fast that you want to go your sunning early in the morning, as by 1pm the sun is murder and if not careful you can get a nasty burn (I know).

Best Way To Get Around:

You need to have a car to get around Pompano and Ft. Lauderdale. A cool thing to use is the water taxi. For .00 you can use the taxi all day to stop at different areas. For .00 on Saturday it will take you to South Miami. It sure beats driving the car and trying to find a parking place.

Best Things About the Resort:
This was our first visit and was very pleased with the resort. Liked the fact it is right on the beach and talked to families who felt the same way. They liked not having to drag lots of stuff around. There are three pools at this condo and one is a kiddie pool. There is also jet ski rentals.

Resort Experience:
We loved our unit and was very clean. The furniture didn't show a lot of abuse and was decorated nice. The staff was very helpful in directing us to places to see and things to do. Didn't care for the fact you had to rent lounge chairs or cabana's but found out that wasn't connected to the resort. A lot of the activities are geared for families. Was surprised to hear how quite it was there at night. Hardly anyone at the pool in the evening.

This restaraunt was recommended to us and was a mile from our condo, so walked down. If you are looking for authentic Italian food, this is the place for you. They have specialists of the day and my husband got the red snapper which he said was great. They also have a more casual pizza parlor next door and we saw mostly families with children there.

We found this place by accident. They serve breakfast,lunch, and dinner. A good meal for the price and is great for families. This seems to be a popular spot for locals and retirees. When you have lunch or dinner there you get a coupon for a free breakfast. Save room for their desserts, and I highly recommend the mint chocolate chip ice cream pie and the Jack Daniels chocolate cheesecake(yum).

This place was across from our condo and so was conveniant. They only serve lunch and dinner. They have seating outside and inside, so you might choose outside after 6pm. This seems to be a very popular spot for locals, and the bar area gets packed and very noisey. You get a lot for the price, and the blackened grilled chicken sandwich was great. They have local fish dishes too. The pizza wasn''t bad either, and they deliver.

Loved this restaurant. It's right on the InterCoastal Waterway, and you can sit and watch the boats go by, and when they have to raise the bridge. They have specials of the day, and the Mahi-Mahi was very good. The steak was so tender you hardly needed a steak knife to cut it.

We loved this place. There are so many different butterflys and colors. If you sit or stand long enough a butterfly will land on you. How cool is that? The kids will love the Lorikeet Encounter, as for $.95 they get a cup of nectar to feed the birds. They tell you to hang on tight to the cup and I know why. As soon as you are given your cup you have birds landing on you. They walked up my arm, around my back and tried to sit on my head. The kids there seemed to love it but you might not want very small children doing this themselves. Some of the kids got frightened by the birds flying on them.

What a fun place to go. It is right down from Butterfly World so you could make a day of hitting both places. There are over 800 merchants selling stuff under one roof. You will find brand-name stuff along with tourist items and of course the junk you can't seem to live without.

They have a great Farmers Market and the prices are very good. It might be a good idea to shop for some of your groceries here instead of Publix. The prices are not bad if looking for gold or silver jewelry. Remember to always ask if that their final price as we found some dealers would bargain. Don't forget to wear good walking shoes.

This is the ultimate shopping place. Put on the walking shoes, as you can spend a whole day here and still not hit all the stores. There are over 400 name-brand and outlet stores, restaurants, movie theaters, and entertainment venues. I found that prices were good at several stores. The Penney's outlet had men's Docker shorts for $5.00 and tops starting at $2.99. You can do major damage to your credit card and vacation budget here. Sawgrass Mills is truly a must-see . . .

Attraction | "Serenity Yacht Club"

Ww did the two hour sunset cruise and were very pleased. A group of about 45 people were with us. You get a cold buffet, which was surprisingly good. The boat takes you down the Intercoastal Waterway and Millionaires Row. We got to see how the other half lives. The skipper told us the lots start at a million plus [ouch]. Some of the boats are floating houses. It was a nice trip.

A Wonderful VacationBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

I can't say how much we enjoyed our time at Pompano Beach. This was our first visit this far down in Florida, and I'm ready to do it again. The weather was fantastic (80s) and there were only a few showers on a couple of days. I loved being right on the beach and there's nothing like taking an evening stroll hand-in-hand with someone special. It has a way of relaxing you and things don't seem so bad when you sit and hear the waves come rolling in.
