Dubbed the "quiet alternative" to the bustling area just to the south. North Myrtle Beach sports nine miles of wide, sandy ocean beaches and several Intercoastal Waterway marinas. A popular fishing spot is the Cherry Grove Pier.
The town is hailed as the birthplace of the "Shag", a dance combining smooth moves with fancy footwork, which evolved on the beach to become the offical state dance. Family entertainment is the specialty at Barefoot Landing, which includes a 20-acre lake, boardwalk, carousel, and thrill-ride simulator. The complex is on US17 near the Intracoastal Waterway and contains more than 80 retail and outlet shops and several restaurants.
Main Street is comprised of small shops, boutiques, beach clubs, and restaurants. Antique shops can be found on Sea Mountain Highway in Cherry Grove. Scenic canal cruises abroad the Barefood Princess II riverboat also are avilable (843) 650-6600 for schedule and ticket information. Nearby is North Myrtle Beach Grand Prix, a family fun park.
