Overview

This place is finally getting better. The cheap touristy shops are giving way to better merchandise. There are actually now a few antique shops around but they are a little further out from downtown.

Quick Tips:

Put to win on number 6 in the sixth race at Oaklawn, and put to place on any gray horse.

Best Way To Get Around:

Whatever you do, don't take a taxi or depend on one showing up. We were at the Arlington having a tod after our Bathhouse walk and had a reservation at Spencer's corner. After waiting out front for thirty minutes, we walked. Best thing to do here is to drive and park at a centralized garage and then walk!

Hotel | "The Wharf"

Best Things Nearby:
Close, but not nearby: shopping & shopping mall; downtown (about 10 mins); Oaklawn Park (about 6-7 mins)

Best Things About the Resort:
Pleasant place, especially in unit on the lakeside; very clean and well-kept; easy to get to.

Resort Experience:
We have stayed at hotels in town but decided to try other locations and the Wharf was great. Easy access to town using 4 lane streets. We went in late winter/early spring so the resort was not real active.

Great place. Very clean but needs to work on better mattresses and either cleaning carpet better or replacing it. Otherwise the unit was very "fresh and clean".

Staff was/is great, very friendly, very helpful and cooperative.

Restaurant

Best Italian in Hot Springs; don't let the strip shopping center outside fool you. They have great classic Italian meals (veal, chicken) including pizza which is far superior to any "fast" pizza joints. Great wines. It's very comfortable and has a great staff, but is a little slow when busy. We are going back!

Great steaks! It's a small place so get reservations, especially on the weekends. Good service. Don't stay too long or loiter though, becasue after your meal they want to push you out!

Restaurant

Great lunch place; good food but be ready to walk it off, such as the onion loaf! I wouldn't eat here all the time, but it's a fairly good "comfort food" type of place.

Story/Tip

The street improvements have made this place a lot better. All areas are now very accessible, especially south of town and the lake. No place is too far out.

We went to Oaklawn on a Sunday and had a very nice experience. We paid the $30 Oaklawn Club day membership and were sufficiently wowed. Definitely a classy place. It was probably (and sadly) only about two to five percent occupied though! They could cut the day price and attract more people. Races went off great with very few scratches. NYRA could take some lessons here.
