Sandbridge Beach

A June 2002 trip to Virginia Beach by CMJordanHoosier

Sandbridge is a small rental-house community just south of Virgina Beach, Virginia. It has a private-beach atmosphere not too far removed from the more active Virginia Beach area.

Overview

I've been going to Sandbridge for several years with my parents and my brother. There are many opportunities for things to do around the area. Within five minutes of the beach, there's a pro-level golf course called Hell's Point. It's a difficult course not designed for the timid. Sandbridge is only about a 20 minute drive to Virginia Beach, where there are many great local restaurants, as well as fishing (which we do on every visit) and water-ski trips, para-sailing, and some small carnival-type amusement parks. Also within an hour drive is Williamsburg, which has an historic area, as well as a Busch Gardens theme park. If you're willing to drive a little bit further to Richmond (about three hours), there is Paramount's King's Dominion theme park, which is similar to King's Island in Cincinnati.

Quick Tips:

Order the Virginia is for Lovers magazine, provided by the state board of tourism, which is a really helpful guide in finding things to do. It can help you to find places to stay, things to do, driving directions, etc.

Best Way To Get Around:

We always drive out to Virginia from Indianapolis, so we've always got a car or two around, which if you can, is the best way to get around. If you are staying in Virginia Beach, the streets can get pretty crowded, so walking is probably the best option. Everything at the actual beach is pretty close by, so it's not too bad.

This was a really nice house, very open and spacious. It also had a really good view for the price. Although not beachfront, the only difference at this particular house was that the road was in the way. Because of a hurricane that occured several years ago, the house across the street was torn down and removed, leaving open beach and an essentially beachfront property for the spindrift, but without the beachfront pricetag.

As a sidenote, we just had a great time at this house, it was one of the most memorable times I've spent on a family vacation. From my cousin Jim thinking he was constantly being attacked by the sandcrabs (there really weren't that many, he just seemed to be a magnet for them in the water), to the house itself, it was a really fun time for everyone.

Hotel | "A Touch of Class (Sandbridge Realty)"

This was one of the most unique houses I've ever been in. I would really love to go back with my friends now that I'm older.

The floor plan in the living room is what makes it so unique. Once you enter the room from the downstairs, the first thing you notice is the line of floor-to-ceiling windows that wrap around the front of the house and face the ocean (to the east) to the southern side of the house. This gives an extraordinarily well-lit atmosphere during the day and a relaxing view at night. It's especially nice at night if you just open a couple windows and listen to the ocean.

The other really cool thing about this house is the bar. Facing the east side of the house and looking out the windows, is a wrap-around bar with seating for six. Add this to the six-person dining table, and you have plenty of room for everyone to eat, even if you have two or three families staying there. Although the bar is not stocked, which one wouldn't expect anyway, there is a mini-fridge behind it where you can keep six packs of beer . . . I mean soda.

All in all, this was a really fun place to stay, for the whole family.
