The White Mountains of New Hampshire

A February 2003 trip to Franconia by lisa marie

This winter's ski trip was to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We stayed in the Franconia Notch State Park area, and traveled to various locations in the White Mountains.

Best Things Nearby:
Skiing, and lots of it!! We visited Cannon mountain, Loon Mountain and Bretton Woods. The aerial tramway at Cannon is a must at any time of year. There are also lots of cross-country, hiking and snowmobiling trails. This is a great area for the outdoor enthusiast.

Best Things About the Resort:
The location is great. Very accessible to all ski areas via route 93. The kids will love the arcade, and the indoor pool and hot tub. There were other kids there, and they really had a great time in the evenings playing the games, and all the buildings connect inside, so there is no need to go outside.

Resort Experience:
The view from our room was very nice. We faced the old ski slopes of Mittersill, with Cannon in the background. I understand that next year Cannon will be expanding there slopes to Mittersill. The units are older. We had a one-bedroom with a living area and a full kitchen. The kitchen was well-equipped to cook most meals in. The living area was tight with the bed pulled out, and the bathroom was also very small. The bedroom was very spacious, with a king-size bed fitting with room to spare. I would not recommend 4 adults in a one-bedroom.

This is NOT a luxurious resort, so don't expect that. It is very rustic. We did however use all the facilities offered: indoor pool (small, but the kids loved it), hot tub, ping pong, game room, restaurant and bar, sleigh rides on the slopes.

As for the restaurant, it was only open a few nights (the winter is their slow season). We did however use the pool table in the bar area, and spent an hour talking to a skiing local, and got some great information on the slopes.

  • Unit Type: 1 Bedroom
  • Activities: Good

  • Unit Satisfaction: Good

Restaurant

Great pub burger! Since there aren't many restaurants open in the area during the winter, this quaint pub caught our eye (and was close to Mittersill).

The pub fare was very good. We played darts and games until the food arrived. They had a nice selection of beers and the staff was friendly.

Spectacular! What a beautiful inn. A little off the beaten path, but worth the trip. The view and the food were outstanding.

This is a first-class inn, with a first class restaurant. If you book a reservation for sunset, you see the amber glow on the mountains facing the restaurant.

This is really an adults-only inn, and is not open every night in the winter, so be sure to call ahead.

Attraction | "Cannon Mountain"

We were told that this is more of a local's mountain. The skiing is faster, and a little more advanced than Loon or Bretton Woods. The lodge is very rustic, and not as upscale as Bretton Woods, but that shows in the price of the lift ticket. They have special mid-week twofers that are worth checking out.

.

The tubing is worth the $10 for a session.

Attraction

Very nice lodge with nice amenities. We used the gondola very often due to the extreme cold on the day we went.

The terrain was very diverse. I think there is something here for every skier.

Attraction

Lovely lodge, with plenty of room to spread out.

The skiing was great. Some groomed, some powder, and some tree skiing. We really enjoyed Bretton Woods. It is a great family resort! With a great view of Mt Washington and the Mt. Washington Hotel.
