Venice
Everyone flocks to San Marco...yes it is beautiful, but there is so much more to see in this unique city. There is a great modern art museum, out of the way restaurants and a cathedral more spectacular than the Basilica at San Marco.

Hotel

This hotel is in the Dorsuduro section, near the Accademia. It is very, very hard to find and it is best to ask a local for directions when you get in the area. The rooms are clean and pretty large for a Venice hotel. The furnishings are basic and the rooms are decorated with modern art. There is a restaurant, and, if you have dinner there, you will get a discount on your meal.

Restaurant

Enjoy some delicious Italian dishes under an arbor, in a romantic garden setting, lit with lanterns. Inside the walls are adorned with paintings from famous artists. The restaurant was a favorite of Peggy Guggenheim and Jackson Pollock. This place is not trampled by tourists, but well known with the locals.

Attraction | "Collezione Peggy Guggenhein"

A great collection of modern art shown in the former home of Peggy Guggenheim. The collection also features black & white photos of the interior of the small palace, as it was when Peggy lived in it. The museum offers 'talks' in the garden, giving a history on her interesting life and love of art. A good biography is also for sale in the gift shop.

Attraction | "Basilica Di Santa Maria Gloriosa Dei Frari"

Look for signs for the Frari to find this magnificent sight. Outside it is not that impressive, but once you step through the doors you will be in awe. Inside you will get to view works by Titian and Bellini, and the tomb of Canova.

Yes, we all know about the gelato, but what about the cocco? In the summer, street vendors sell fresh coconut off of their tiny fountains. A great, cool snack when it's hot. A piece of cocco goes for about .50.

Story/Tip

The water bus (vaporetti) is the best way to see the city by water or to get to a destination that is too far to walk to. The vaporetti makes stops around the major sights. Cost is only about $3.---a great bargain considering that a ½ hour gondola ride can cost you $150.!!!
