Cold weather in Hot Springs

A February 2003 trip to Hot Springs by sister jane

A week in Hot Springs, AR.

Even though the weather didn't cooperate for outdoor activities, there are plenty of things to do inside. The National Park Service conducts tours through the former Fordyce Bath House that gives a glimpse into life during the hey-day of Hot Springs bathing. Don't miss a chance to experience it yourself at the Hot Springs Bath House! The "treatment" will warm you up on a chilly day! The Bath House Show was a great walk down memory lane with songs from each decade beginning in the 1940's.

Quick Tips:

Hot Springs National Park is a very small park but the hiking trails are perfect for short hikes. Some are more strenuous than others, but none are too difficult.

If you go in February, take your umbrellas and your winter coats. It snowed the week before we arrived and the high temperatures were in the 40's (Fahrenheit) most of the week we were there.

Best Way To Get Around:

A car is necessary to see Garvan Woodland Gardens and the Diamond Lakes region around Hot Springs. If you're only visiting to take advantage of the National Park trails and the baths, walking is a perfect means of transportation.

Best Things Nearby:
Bath House Row, Hot Springs Nat'l Park, Garvan Woodland Gardens, Waffle House restaurant.

Best Things About the Resort:
The 2 bedroom villa was huge! It was nestled in a quiet, wooded setting with a view of Lake Hamilton.

Resort Experience:
The villa was in like-new condition with 2 large bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a Jacuzzi tub, nicely laid-out kitchen, and a large living room to gather the entire family in front of the fireplace on a cold, rainy day.

It was too cold to use either of the outdoor pools, but resort guests have free access to the health club across the road for indoor activities. There were many activities/tours provided through the resort that we didn't take advantage of, but others raved about the fun they had on the tours.

Restaurant

There are no Waffle Houses in the Midwest, so it's always fun to go south to eat at a Waffle House. We had hearty, tasty, and inexpensive dinners. With breakfast served all day long, everyone in the family can find something they like. Unfortunately, there wasn't a non-smoking section so we took our chances that no one around us would light up while we were eating. We were lucky because no one did!
