A Week in Englewood Florida

A February 2003 trip to Englewood by Hank M

We were just trying to escape the cold and find a place in the sun in the lower part of Florida. When we arrived in the area, we were pleasantly surprised by the quiet and uncommercialize feel of it.

Our timeshare was on the beach and had a wonderful heated pool. For us, since we had our daughter and 3-month-old grandson with us, we were just happy to enjoy the pool and beach. We could watch beautiful sunsets from our room or the grass hut at the edge of the beach. The weather in February was ideal--70 to 85 degrees.

Quick Tips:

We enjoyed the restaurants in the area. Of particular note were Lock n' Key and Prime Time. We had crab cakes and prime rib respectively and they were excellent. There are not a lot of restaurants in the area, though, and getting there early is helpful to reduce the waiting time.

Best Way To Get Around:

Englewood beach is not very big and fortunately, it's very flat allowing you great access by bicycle. There did not appear to be any public transportation readily available.

Best Things Nearby:
The very best thing nearby is the beach itself. It is clean, and in February, it is nearly vacant.

Best Things About the Resort:
The best thing about this timeshare is the heated pool and its proximity to the beach. We thought the management was very friendly and helpful. We borrowed the available bikes and rode all around the area. It was located on the southern end of Manasota Key, which appears to be the older end. Further north are a lot of newer and much more beautiful homes and condos.

Resort Experience:
We did not know what we were going to find in Englewood, and were pleasantly surprised by the non-commercial atmosphere of the area. The timeshare appeared to be an older motel looking place from the outside, and our two bedroom unit was a little small, but we found that it worked for us once we fell into a routine. There is only one bathroom, which became a bit of a contention, but when you are on vacation, you can deal with anything. Our unit was on the second floor and we had a great view of the pool and the ocean beyond that.

We had a very satisfying vaction overall because the weather was great, the people were nice, and the area was a very pleasant surprise. The unit was not as clean as it could be and not in real good repair (the kitchen faucet sprayed out the side, vertical blinds that kept falling, and the air conditioning that was ineffective at times). However, we didn't let that spoil our stay.
