Lawrence Eateries

A June 2000 trip to Lawrence by camera-gal

Lawrence's culture is so diverse that there's no exception to the diversity of it's restaurants. From the cheap eats to the fine dining, there's something for everyone.

Because there's so many people who live here from so many regions of the U.S. and world, Lawrence food is awesome if you're willing to try something new. My absolute favorites are Papa Keno's and Yello Sub because their locally owned and you can't find them anywhere else. Well, the food is excellent too. It's not just the food either. It's the atmosphere also that makes an eatery really cool. Papa Keno's has the ovens within view so you can watch them make your pizza. Yello Sub's decor is out of this world. The others have their own special charm too.

Try a slice a pizza from Papa Keno's or a foot-long sub at Yello Sub. Either way you're sure to be full to the brim. Your taste buds will be hoppin' too.

Quick Tips:

Your best bet for finding a place to eat is downtown on Mass. Street. Coffe shops, clothing stores and eateries are all over.

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking! It's fast, it's cheap and you don't have to find a place to park.

Paisano's RistoranteBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Paisano's"

I've eaten at Paisano's twice and found the food excellent both times. The first time was for lunch on a Saturday so there was absolutely no crowd. The other time was a Friday night and we waited about 45 minutes. The atmosphere is great. It's really an Olive Garden type experience with Italian style decorations like murals on walles and wine colored decor.

The food is out of this world. Rich, but not too sweet tomato sauce, tangy chicken drizzled with olive oil. Bread and salad are served for free with your food. The staff was nice and quick. When I dined in the evening, each of us orded a different martini so we could sample them. They have a great wine and martini list. Be sure not to overindulge and have your full stomach bursting.

Papa Keno's PizzeriaBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Papa Keno's"

As soon as you walk into the door of Papa Keno's, the smell will hit you.

Garlic and herbs, tomatos and basil, cheese and bread. The slices of pizza are HUGE! When you get your pizza, ask them to cut it up just so you can eat it. My favorite is the Columbo--extra cheese, garlic, and roma tomatoes. It's ooey, gooey and yummy. The price isn't bad either. One slice'll do ya. Plus a drink is about $5.00.

Yello SubBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Yello Sub is the Beatle's song "Yellow Submarine". The love of this song by the owners is apparent as soon as you step into any of the restaurants. The decor on the walls is cartoonish and spacey like the movie "Yellow Submarine".

But the decor isn't the best part of Yello Sub, nor the great music they play. At Yello Sub they bake their bread fresh, then fill it with your choice of ingredients, then bake the subs again. The cheese melts and the flavors combine. You won't be able to eat here just once. Half subs are about $4.00, whole ones are about $6.00.

Old Chicago PizzaBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Weekends are hopping at Old Chicago Pizza. With over 100 beers from around the world and cheap drink prices, Old Chicago is the place to go for both eating and drinking. The food is excellent--from pizza to calzones. If you don't like the italian variety, they have burgers, chicken sandwiches and salads. The guys we were with played pool at the table near the bar while we waited for our food to arrive. Tons of toppings for your specially made pizza. Some options are sun-dried tomatoes and jalepenos.
