The trip was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime, and it was. We will remember it for the rest of our lives. We left Saudi Arabia for a round the world trip. Two families and luggage for six week tour. I being the planner of the event had read that you did not need reservations in Hong Kong, our first stop. But the book did not know this would be the first meeting of all the government officials to decide the best way for Hong Kong not to be under British rule. Over 3000 extra hotel accommodations were needed. So when lowly regular people arrive with no reservation, yep, you guessed right, no rooms!

The taxi driver had a sister with a special hotel. "You understand it is not a regular hotel," he tells the men. I say "let's go see". We did and it was one of Hong Kong's best little whore houses. I say "I will stay" - after all it was only American dollars, and I've never stayed in one, but my friend being a little prudish says "no way, I will not stay in a ----house." So we say thank you to the taxi driver and go to the Hilton, they were so kind they start calling all hotels in area.

Finally, there are two rooms at the brand new Hong Kong Ritz Carlton right on Hong Kong Bay. One room is only and the other is a night. We had airline tickets for two nights so we took the rooms.

It gets better from here. Everytime we left our rooms and returned our butler would come and unpack our package, turn on the bath, and turn back the linens. As a habit that I have long since dropped, I would shower and then blowdry my hair in the nude. I went into the outer area of the suite, turned on the light (which calls the butler), and did not know this was his signal to appear in my room. Standing at the window with curtains you could see out but not in, blowdrying my hair when in walks the butler. I do not know who was more shocked, me or the butler. But I do know that as we were leaving our room, the young man that was our butler was walking toward us and all of a sudden he turns to go the other way.

Quick Tips:

Make reservations, or stay in Hong Kong's best. From there we made stops around the world, but had no other eventful happening until we reached USA. Landed in CA's LAX and rented a car that would fit six and all their luggage.

Best Way To Get Around:

Public transportation. This is the only way to go in Hong Kong. In California the only way to go is by car or biycle.

McDonalds

The first place the children wanted to eat was McDonalds. We pull in looking like the Clampits gone to town. After we finish the men made the decision to bring thier coffee (this was the days before the lawsuit of coffee between the legs). My husband was driving and was not sure which way to go, so he pulled out too fast and our friend Neil spills his coffee and it lands in his most private parts. He says a very ugly word and his wife pops him on the shoulder. He is not a happy camper. My husband pulls to the side so that Neil can compose himself.

To our amazement we look up to see two little African American boys on a bicyle coming straight toward us. They never slowed down and hit us right in the center of the car. The little boy on the handle bars rolls right up our windshield and his face lands on the window. He is shocked, and with big eyes he says how sorry he is, jumps down, and pulls from his back pocket a pair of channel locks, makes an adjustment on their bike, and take off. By now we have forgotten the hot coffee and are rolling with laughter.

We just happen to be there during the 50 year anniversity. Whoopee. Everyone in the world was there except the government officials that were still in Hong Kong trying to decide - just hand them over to China no big deal, we waited in lines for hours. The children were very excited and wanted to ride, not wait in line.

Experience

After a harrowing six weeks we finally arrived in Houston, TX. I being the type that really want you to learn something new and exciting every day asked the girls what they had learned and what was the best part of the trip. They look at each other and one said in her very slow Texas drawl, "well, I learned one good thing." she said. I excitedly asked her what it is. "I learned never to go on a vacation with you ever again, but, if I do someone is going to pay me a lot of money". Not quite what I expected.
