An August 2002 trip to Moscow by corken

Moscow is a magical city, not at all as one would expect. I went with the idea that it was a city which would be corrupt, dirty, and not so modern, but boy was I surprised!

Overview

Moscow is truly modern, full of designer shops such as Gucci, Armani, etc. It is a huge city, but is very easy to get around. We stayed at the Rossiya Hotel, which is adjacent to St. Basils Cathedral, which in itself is a sight to believe. In fact, the person who was originally commissioned to design it had his eyes removed by the then Ruler, as he didn't want him to be able to design another like it.

Quick Tips:

There's plenty to do and places to visit such as the Kremlin, which again is a masterpiece of construction. It is worthwhile to take a boat trip along the Moscow River, which allows you to see other parts of Moscow that you would probably not see on foot. It passes Gorky Park (which houses the doomed USSR space shuttle, which is now used as a theme park attraction).

The one problem that I did find is that he doesn't really cater for English speaking people. Everything is in Russian, including street signs, menus, etc. If I had to tell you all the wonderful things about Moscow, I just wouldn't have the time. If you get a chance, think of Moscow as your next city break!

Best Way To Get Around:

We stayed in the newly refurbished wing that was just overlooking Red Square. Accommodations were basic and clean. It had a good size bathroom, fridge, and television. But to be honest, the breathtaking view in the morning of St. Basils meant it didn't matter. A five-star hotel couldn't have given you the same view. A buffet breakfast is also included in the price. Well worth the money, and security in the hotel was second to none.

Restaurant | "Yolki-Palki ( Mongolian)"

To be honest, it was my cup of tea (so to speak). It is a huge Mongolian restaurant where you pick out your own ingredients which are then cooked in front of you. The staff is very friendly, and the food is very cheap. My friend Sara really enjoyed it, but after seeing the raw chicken liver, I decided to have a beer instead. It is well worth a visit and caters well for vegetarians and meat lovers alike. Give it a go!
