Standin' on a Corner

A June 2000 trip to Winslow by camera-gal

Quote: Winslow's claim to fame comes from the Eagles song "Take It Easy". It's a cowboy town--one from the wild west.

Standin' on a Corner

Overview

Quote:
2nd and Kingsley--the alleged 'corner' that the Eagles were thinking about when they wrote the song.

Quick Tips:

There isn't much else to see in this sleepy town, so stop for the pictures, then high-tail it out of there. Don't forget to buy a t-shirt to commemorate your trip.

Best Way To Get Around:

You gotta drive into town, then stop at the visitors center. They've got maps marked as to where the site is.

As my mom and I were gawking at the bronze statue and mural at the "corner", the song "Take it Easy" began to play. I thought I'd tripped a wire, but it was really the woman who owned the "a href="http://www.route66roadworks.com/">Route 66 Roadworks store. She was kind enough to give some color to our memory of our stop in Winslow. We followed her upstairs to her store and bought some t-shirts and souvenirs. She deserved it. Thanks.

Meteor Crater (Barringer Crater)

Attraction | "Meteor Crater"

Quote:
Compared to the Grand Canyon, the Winslow Meteor Crater isn't that big, but it's still BIG! The crater was formed hundreds of thousands of years ago when a giant meteor fell from space and collided with earth. The meteor was destroyed upon impact, but the hole still remains.

While you can't walk inside the crater, you can look down into it at fixed telescope points. A 6 ft. cut-out of an astronaut is barely visible with the naked eye. I couldn't even see the American flag displayed next to the cut-out.

We drove into town mid-afternoon. The sun was drooping from the sky. It was hot and dusty. We came for one purpose and one purpose only. We wanted to see 'the corner'. I'd heard the song many times. It's one of my favorites, but I never stopped to ponder about where that 'corner' was. Winslow. Winslow, Arizona. Second and Kingsley to be exact. We twisted through town and parked along the street. There it was. A bronze statue of a young Don Henley. Murals along the brick walls. A girl in a flatbed Ford. We'd listened to the song all the way into town. I crossed the street to take a picture. I needed to remember the moment. The music started and I jumped. It ...Read More

Old Route 66

Story/Tip

Arizona is said to have the longest stretch of what was once Route 66. Yes it does. I know. We drove it. Not that there was much to see. The two-lane road takes you through desertion. At times I became worried because we would not see a car for miles. Only small privately-owned gas stations pop up once or twice. We had to stop to use the restroom at one and it appeared to be both a bar and a gas station. Strange mix. It was worth it though --to say we'd driven the longest and last stretch of the most famous and beloved interstate in the United States.
