Villa Vera Acapulco

A February 2003 trip to Acapulco by sharpy

Villa Vera Hotel & Spa in Acapulco was OK; we had great weather, but I would not recommend staying in the bay area. The Mayan Palace is so much nicer.

Hotel | "Villa Vera Hotel & Spa"

The Villa Vera Hotel was nice. The resort is located in the mountain with some beautiful views. The problem is that so much of the city is literally in ruins. A lot of your views are looking at buildings that are falling down with garbage all over. The hotel has some very nice pools and an awesome staff that was very friendly and helpful. Although our room was cleaned daily it was infested with these little bugs, which other guests told us they had too.

Since the resort was not full when we were there they upgraded us to a room with a balcony, but generally the rooms you get through RCI do not. The resort is separated into individual units at all different levels of the hills, so if you have any walking difficulties this resort would not be for you since you either have to go up or down a hill to get to anything.

The spa: if you like going for a massage in 95 degree weather with no air-conditioning, then you might like it and they charge $8 per day per person to use the fitness center, which is in a glass enclosed room facing the sun with no air-conditioning. It smelled horrible in there, we could not use it. If I went back I'd stay at Mayan Palace.

Best Things Nearby:
The best thing is you're not near the crowded city.

Best Things About the Resort:
The pools, beach, and rooms.

Resort Experience:
Although we did not stay here, we went for a visit. It is probably the best place to stay in Acapulco. The resort is huge with the biggest pool I've ever seen and a great beach.

The beach is so much better here then in the bay of Acapulco where the water is dirty and the sand is real rough. They have a great Mexican Fiesta on Tuesday nights, it had so much great food and a very nice show. We viewed several different buildings and all the different rooms, I don't think there's a bad one anywhere on the property.

Restaurant | "Maderia"

This restaurant was awesome. They charge 399 Pesos ($40 US). You choose an appetizer, a salad or soup, an entry, and desert and coffee. It's a beautiful place with great views of the bay -- go at night. Guys must wear pants (no shorts).

Restaurant

This is a really good authentic Mexican restaurant on the main street. Great service, low prices, good food, and a nice atmosphere. If you like goat, they were cooking it on an open barbecue; we did not try it but a lot of people did.

Restaurant | "Piepo's"

This is located on the main street. It has excellent seafood in a casual setting. I would recommend the shrimp in butter and garlic.

Story/Tip

Overall I would say we like Cancun so much better than Acapulco. I know we will not go back here. The area is old and run down, very crowded, and dirty. In the bay the water is not clear and the sand is rough. Everywhere you look you see garbage on the streets and people begging everywhere you go. You could not walk down the main street at night without dozens of children begging from you while their mothers sat in a dark doorway with her hand out too - it's disturbing.

Also the sidewalks had huge holes that if you didn't see them you'd break a leg. The transportation here stinks. I read about people taking the "yellow buses", we saw one or two a day, so good luck finding one. And the cabs rip you off. We could of rented a car for so much less, but most people are afraid to drive here because the traffic is so crazy.
