My best friend and I went to Milan for a few days last November. We went for a love of Italy rather than shopping, and discovered a fabulous city instead of the industrial grey town we'd expected. It rained SOLIDLY.

For me, the nicest thing about Milan is the people. They were unfailingly lovely to us. It probably helped we were two girls who speak Italian, but people were just lovely and went out of their way to help us or make us welcome.

The Navigli area south of the centre is great for cafes, bars and restaurants.

The cathedral is under scaffolding - DO check this out before you go. Disappointing isn't the word. However going up on the roof was amazing - great views and a wonderful appreciation of the intricacy of it!!

We also took the train to Stresa on Lake Maggiore. The rain was incredible, but the lake looked romantic despite it...I can only imagine how lovely it is in the sunshine!!

Quick Tips:

The Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele off the main square has some great cafes. Slightly overpriced but great people-watching opportunities.

Dress up - everyone's glam. Be part of it.

Best Way To Get Around:

We walked, but used the tube as well and it was easy to use, cheap, clean and efficient. If only London could learn....

Hotel

This hotel was a good deal. It's not flash or posh or any other upmarket adjective, but it was clean, safe, and damn good value!!

It's located about a 10-minute's walk from the Cathedral and very near the bars and clubs of both San Lorenzo and Navigli! Our room was slightly tired and dark, but was huge with massive, old-fashioned furniture -- we both really liked the feel of the quarters.

One of the nicest things is the bar/café on the roof terrace, which we adored. We had breakfast up there.

Make sure you ask for a room that doesn't look out over the street, as it's a noisy artery. Our back room was really quiet, so you'll be fine.

I'd stay here again in Milan -- I liked it.
