We were disappointed with the Mayan Palace but we had a great time at X-caret and Xel-Ha natural theme parks. We also enjoyed the city of Playa Del Carmen, especially at night.

Mayan Palace
Best Things Nearby:
Playa Del Carmen, X-Caret Natural Theme Park, Xel-Ha Natural Theme Park, Cozumel.

Best Things About the Resort:
Swimming pool, great food (but expensive), daily maid service.

Resort Experience:
We were basically disappointed with our accommodations at the Mayan Palace. We were in a "B" unit and it seemed that they cut corners everywhere. There was a single bed-side table between 2 double beds so one of us had no table. There was no coffee pot or iron or ironing board. Think of your basic small motel room with no ammenities, and double-beds to boot.

The food was excellent but so expensive that we didn't eat there very often. Fortunately we had a car because we spent very little time at the resort, instead prefering to visit the surrounding area. The only thing great about the place is the swimming pool. One day we decided to try it out but we didn't know the routine of reserving a shady place very early or not getting one for the rest of the day. Fortunately there was some shade provided by a palm tree, and there was plenty down by the non-swimmable beach.

We went on the high-pressure sales talk and they still seemed to think we might buy in after we said we didn't even like the place. But part of the deal was a free breakfast and 15% off all meals and drinks for the week, so it was worth it to put up with the sales talk.

Someday when they get more of it built, there will be more to see and do at the resort, but I still recommend renting a car at the airport. We got a pretty good deal as we were about the only people there vying for all of the rental car people standing around -- it was definitely a buyer's market.

If you do plan to go there, definitely get the "A" unit and definitely rent a car unless your idea of fun is to sit by the pool all week.

On the plus side, everything was extremely clean and the staff was very friendly (but don't miss turning your swimming pool towel in or you'll pay a hefty fee for being late).

X-Caret or Xel_Ha
Both nature parks were great. One park was partly a zoo with exotic animals and a great butterfly garden, and even caves to explore. The other park seemed more like a resort. The restaurants were great and the dolphins did great acts. Hopefully the photos say more than I am able to say...sheer beauty.
