Sun, sea, sand and salsa!!

An October 2002 trip to Fort Lauderdale by bokcrazy

This is a town that is at the middle of it all. It's not far to the Art Deco district of Miami Beach, or the shopping of Palm Beach. Fort Lauderdale has its own strip along the beach of bars, clubs, shopping and restaurants. A little inland is the Riverwalk.

Best Things About the Resort:
One of the best things about this timeshare is that it is very close to the I-95, giving you great access to everything up and down the coast.

Resort Experience:
The resort is great. The main room in our two bedroom unit had a jacuzzi bath. Both bathrooms are rather big. There is plenty of space to put your clothes away. The rooms have both a washer and dryer. Try and get an upper level floor and also one that overlooks the pool, otherwise your view is pretty dismal.

For entertainment there is a pool, gym, and also miniture golf (aka putt-putt).

For an additional fee on-site, there is a spa. Take advantage and get a massage, some aromatherapy, body treatment, waxing, and just plain pamper yourself.

Very good access to the highway.

Best Things About the Resort:

Resort Experience:
These units are actually lockout units, which means that a two bedroom lands up with two kitchens. The smaller unit has a really small bedroom, and is not that comfortable.

I have actually stayed at both the VV at Weston and the VV at Bonaventure, down the street from each other, and found them generally disappointing. No special services, very far from the beach, uninspired architecture, and in the one case the building was rather old.

There is a Publix nearby. Note: there are not many decent restaurants in the area, so you will probably have to drive further afield.

Santa Barbara Resort & Yacht ClubBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Santa Barbara Resort & Yacht Club"

Best Things Nearby:
Fort Lauderdale and all its nighttime activities are closeby. A little further south and you get Miami's fun nightlife. To the north is Boca Raton and a little further north is Palm Beach.

Best Things About the Resort:
The view - if you're not overlooking the ocean, chances are you're overlooking the intercoastal, which is gorgeous. It's also two minutes (you're across the road) from the beach. This timeshare is very central.

Resort Experience:
I found some of the furniture, especially the sleep sofas, to be rather uncomfortable. Also the units are rather badly planned as they were obviously hotel rooms before. The corridors have very low ceilings, which led to a feeling of mild clausterphobia. Thankfully the rooms don't share that attribute.

This place is definitely a hangout and was quite popular with the 20s to 30s crowd, although there were a few people older in the crowd.

The type of food is definitely American, but with more than a hint of the Caribbean thrown in for good measure.

Do make sure you ask for the daily specials, as they tend to be less expensive and quite good. Also try the conch chowder.

One thing I learned while down in Fort Lauderdale is if you don't like the weather (rain), wait 15 minutes - it's sure to change.

If you can grab one of the outdoor tables, the chairs are swings! Very cool.

There are apparently five quarterdecks around Fort Lauderdale, but this one was actually on the corner of Los Olas and Cordova, about two blocks (they're small blocks) from the beach.

Restaurant

I ate there several times, our server one time was really bad. As for the food, it's generally quite good, I suggest going with their seafood specials as they are normally very fresh, tasty and good return for your money.

The restaurant is on the strip facing the beach so whether during the night or during the day you're sure to have a great view or fun watching the passing parade.

The airboat ride was both fun and educational for the kids, as the captain stopped every so often to point out the fauna and flora.

The resident alligator handler shows you how to keep an alligator from opening his mouth. He might even let you pet one of the gators--be sure to count your fingers afterwards. :-)

There is also a replica of an 18th-century Indian Seminole village. Native American crafts are for sale as well.

The RiverwalkBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

At first glance this appears to be just another outdoor mall. However, there is a lot to see and do at this mall on the intercoastal highway. From gourmet restaurants to bar fare, nightclubs to shopping. Wander around the square, most nights there is some form of free musical entertainment in the mini amphitheater, also there are artists, mimes and people with huge exotic birds.

The water taxi has a stop at the riverwalk, it's one of the better stops, to either start or end your ride. Take the children, or go later at night for an adult evening. The Riverwalk is sure to provide entertainment. Just around the corner from the entrance to the Riverwalk is a street with a number of bars/coffee shops on it. This is more a hangout for the 20's and 30's crowd.

The official site for the Riverwalk is: . You can check out bands that will be playing and any latest events.
