In and About Denver

Overview

Quote:
Some of the best things to do in and about Denver are to visit the Denver Zoo, take a tour through the Coors Brewery, see Red Rocks, visit Blackhawk and Central City (do a little gambling on the side), and just enjoy the mountain scenery.

Best Way To Get Around:

Its been several years since we stayed in Buena Vista and I'm not really sure of the name of the motel. I checked the internet yellowpages and map and it seems to have been one of the two listed above. Strange thing is, they both have the same address and phone number.

We had a wonderful view of the mountains from our room, which was more like an individual little cabin than a motel continuous chain of rooms. The room was clean and adequately equipped, nothing special as we don't go in for elaborate lodgings. Just stayed for one night, so we were in and out without too much fuss.

Coors Brewery

Attraction

Quote:
The walking tour of the Coors Brewery takes about 40 minutes and includes everything from the malting process to brewing the beer to the packaging of the final product. Brewery hours are from 10-4, Monday through Saturday, so plan accordingly. Samples of the beer are available to persons of drinking age if you are so inclined. It is really fascinating to see how a modern brewery operates. Some of the machinery is certainly strange looking. And of course there is a gift shop for those needing to take home a reminder of the tour and/or company.

Denver Mint

Attraction

Quote:
The Denver Mint is free to tourists and is definitely security conscious. No photos are allowed inside the building and visitors must pass through a metal detector. Once past the security, the mint is an interesting place to tour. Waiting for your tour to begin can often be longer than the tour itself, which takes approximately 20 minutes. There is a gift shop where all kinds of money related items can be purchased.

Parking can be a problem as the mint does not provide parking. We were fortunate and found a metered spot on the street. There are a couple of commercial lots in the area.

Garden of the Gods

Attraction

Quote:
Gorgeous. That's what it's like. Splendid and magnificent. The colors are vivid as you look out from the visitors center toward the rust-red sandstone rock formations. Juxtaposed against this rust-red are scruffy, dark green pine trees, with Pikes Peak in the background. Awesome, wonderful and glorious.

The Denver Zoo is a wonderful place to spend a day strolling outdoors. Not only is it really good exercise, it also brings back a childlike sense of wonder at all the marvelous creatures that exist on this planet. And when you're tired of wandering around there are sit down activities such as the bird show to entertain you while you rest your feet.

Central City

Story/Tip

Quote:
Central City is a place we like to visit when we are in the Denver area. Just to the west of Denver, it provides the historic atmosphere that we enjoy so much when we travel. The main street preserves the western and mining heritage of the area. There are lots of keepsakes to purchase and plenty of places to sit down and have a bite to eat.

We always thoroughly enjoy our day in Central City. The last time we were there gambling was just in it's infant stage, but I understand that now it has grown into a booming enterprise. Ha -- there's still gold in them there hills.

I live on the plains where you can see forever. Even though it's a place of great beauty, there's not much surprise of what's around the bend. So driving the 8 hours or so that it takes us to get to the Rockies actually transports us into another world, one where there is mystery about what is around the next curve, what's over the next peak, one of the majesty of height and standing in the clouds. If you aren't a ski or extreme sports fanatic, don't think that the Rockies are not for you. One of our favorite things to do in the Rockies is to simply explore and take in these marvelous sights. To sit by a roadside brook and listen to the water ripple over stones and hear the leaves rustle ove...Read More

My husband and I never know where we will end up some days when we start bummin' around in the car. If a road looks interesting and it seems to be on the map, sometimes we just take it and see where it goes. Other times we have a vague idea of where we might want to end up and then set about finding an interesting way to get there. On one of our 'just bummin'' days in Colorado, we happened upon Breckenridge. Seems as if most everyone has heard of Breckenridge because of skiing and winter fun. But it is just the cutest little community. There are wonderful shops and winding streets and little cafes here and there. It's fun just to stroll around the town and see what there is to see. ...Read More
