Overview

Take ferry to Isla Mujeres. Go to Xcaret - it's a theme park with live animals and swimming with dolphins. Go to Playa del Carmen for a bit of old, quaint Cancun. Horseback riding. Snorkeling. Scuba Diving.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Avoid taxis. City bus is only 60 pesos (60 cents) and one comes by every minute. It runs all around Cancun, and there's even one that goes to Walmart/Sam's Club! If you stay at this resort, there's a complimentary shuttle that runs between the sister resorts all day and evening. Very handy.

Hotel

Very nice. We had a studio reserved but requested two beds instead of one and a couch, and they accommodated us. We had a deck overlooking the lagoon/street side. Small kitchenette. Perfectly adequate, clean, and comfortable. I was required to enter a price above, but that's only a guess. I didn't pay since it was a timeshare exchange.

Best Things Nearby:
Hotel zone, clubs, and malls.

Best Things About the Resort:
Very friendly and accommodating staff, lots of activity, several restaurants, and good location.

Resort Experience:
Accommodations were perfectly adequate. We had booked a studio but, upon check-in, requested two beds and received it. Nice deck overlooking the lagoon. Really enjoyed sister resort as well, the Sunset Lagoon. They have a complimentary shuttle that runs all day and evening.

Pool areas very different. Very loud and full of activities at Royal Sunset, and relaxing and peaceful at Lagoon. Also, water sports available at Lagoon Resort. I didn't like temperature of pool - it was freezing and should have been heated. Also, there's no beach at all, probably a result of the hurricanes. All in all, an above average experience.

Restaurant | "La Vela - at Sunset Lagoon Resort"

This was the restaurant at the sister resort. They required reservations, but you may book them all at one time for the entire week. It was the best restaurant between all of them at the two resorts. Great service - wonderful food. Everything from appetizers to soups to salads, to five different pasta choices w/ choice of five different sauces, to entree, to dessert, to special coffees and cappuccinos! It was part of our all-inclusive package, so I didn't take note of the prices. I highly recommend it!!

Story/Tip

Truly enjoyed my experience at Royal Sunset. Recommend taking ferry to Isla Mujeres for a day. Take city bus (60 cents or six pesos) to Tulum, then taxi to port. Ferry is less than $4.00/person. Rent a golf cart while there (negotiate - we got them down to $30/day from $45/day). Ride all around the island. Go to Garrafon for snorkeling - it's a beautiful park - costs approx. $15 for the day. North Beach on the other end of island is the nicest beach. Also heard Xcaret was really nice, but didn't make it there.

As for clubs, we found Pat O'Brien's was most fun for the older set (40's-50's) - they played oldies. Carlos n' Charlie's also fun. That's right next to Sunset Lagoon. If you need sundries cheap, go to Walmart. Take R2 bus (says Walmart on it)- there's also a Sam's Club there, so take your card!
