Husky Sledding in Lapland

A February 2002 trip to Salla by Rory W

Quote: Salla is a fantastic place to experience a true 'winter wonderland'. Carpeted in a layer of thick snow during the winter months, it is a great place to see reindeer, husky dogs, and the elusive Northern Lights!

Husky Sledding in Lapland

Overview

Quote:
For a small town far up inside the Arctic Cricle, Salla has many wonderous opportunites to experience a true 'winter wonderland.' Salla Reindeer Park is a must-see attraction, and is within gentle walking distance of the resort. Here you can feed the reindeer or try husky sledging and ice fishing. Salla has several ski lifts accessing some nice runs from the top of the resort's main hill. From here you can gaze across miles of snow-covered trees into the Russian wilderness. If you are really lucky, nighfall brings a spectacular natural fireworks show--the eerie Northern Lights. Many units here have their own private saunas--definitely reccommended!Quick Tips: A car is needed to see everything...Read More

We stayed in a self-contained cabin that slept six people. The unit was very spacious, with a double bedroom and two twin bedrooms. Also included was a bathroom, separate WC, and private sauna with shower. The kitchen facilities were also good with oven, microwave, hob and grill units, and a full fridge/freezer. The group of cabins is situated in the middle of the woods, some 15-minutes' walk from the main resort center. The accommodation was also right on the ski slopes, and near to one of the few resort restaurants. All in all, the place was very well equipped, very spacious, and in a fantastic scenic setting.

A winter wonderland. Although the resort is small and a bit isolated, the scenery and activities make this resort in Lapland a must. Apart from skiing in the best snow conditions I have ever experienced, with no crowds whatsoever, you can run a husky dog-sled team, go ice fishing on a frozen lake, go on a snowmobile safari (with the opportunity to cross over into Russia) and pet and feed reindeer. All this in a place where the snow-covered scenery has to be seen to be believed. And it doesn't stop at night either--some of the trails are floodlit until about 9-10pm, and you may even get a spectacular show of Northern Lights. If you are looking for a fantastic, off the beaten track experience, this...Read More
