The Empire Rises Again- Rome, Italy

An August 2001 trip to Rome by Antonio (Sturno)

Rome is by far one of the most historic and well renowned cities in the world. The beauty and the historic sights of Rome make this place one of the most visited and enjoyable cities ever.

In Rome there is way too much to do. That's actually a good thing. Depending on where you want to start a vacation, Rome has a world to choose from. To start, I suggest you sit back and relax in your hotel room and just soak up the style and social life of Rome. After that, you may want to go visit sights such as The Arc of Constantine, which lies nearby the Colosseum, which is only a ten-minute ride from The Fountain Di Trevi. These were by far the most remarkable sights. The best moment was probably when I had my girlfriend videotape me from behind as I walked up through the halls of the Colosseum and reenacted the famous scene from Gladiator.

Quick Tips:

My suggestion would be to visit as many of the sights, such as the various fountains in Rome's center square, the famous Piazza Di Spagna, and the Piazza Di Venezia. These are remarkable structures that were built so long ago and are still in constant use. Try to get involved in a group tour that brings you around the ruins because it is so big, you may get lost within the rubble.

Best Way To Get Around:

If you like walking, it is not that crowded and not that horrible, but for those of you who need transportation, you can either take the subway or a cab. I recommend you leave your car in a lot. Otherwise, there are also little trolleys that can take you around.

During my stay, I had the opportunity to stay in the Holiday Inn. Now don't be afraid, this is not the American style Holiday Inn Motel. This was huge like a resort and had tennis courts and restaurants included in the package.

The rooms were very nice and definitely comfortable. The air-conditioning actually works unlike most accommodations. There was a restaurant in the rear that was set around a lit outdoor pool. This was the most remarkable scenery for a restaurant I had ever seen. They made the food inside, where there was an indoor part of the restaurant, but they grilled the food outside creating a savory and delicious aroma. The check-in area was very courteous and they spoke many languages to help tourists.

The best part about the hotel was that they have a bus that leaves on an average of five times per day that take you into the center of Rome. The bus also takes you to the subway in case you wanted to go out for a night or just enjoy the shopping of Rome.
