Chattanooga - More than just a choo choo

A travel journal to Chattanooga by Tideone

There is more to Chattanooga than the Glenn Miller song, "Chattanooga Choo Choo." While it is true you can ride a "Choo Choo" in Chattanooga one can also ride an incline railway to the top of Lookout Mountain and from Rock City one can see seven states.

My most memorable moment of my last trip to Chattanooga was my wife (it was our honeymoon) talking me into getting on the Incline Railway. I am not particularly fond of heights and going up the side of a mountain in a car that is almost completely made of glass - well let's just say it is a trip i will never forget and neither will the rest of the passengers, who I am told I kept in hysterics with my carryings on as we went up and down the mountain.

Quick Tips:

For a fun trip, ride the Downtown Arrow from the Chattanooga Choo Choo to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. The entire roundtrip will take an afternoon but the museum and its large exhibit of railroad cars is worth the trip. In fact it was so interesting we went back the next day because we had not been able to see and do everything.

Best Way To Get Around:

The best way to get around downtown Chattanooga is on the electric shuttle buses but be warned - they are not air conditioned and can make for a hot ride in the summer but I guess it beats walking.

The first time we stayed at the Choo Choo we stayed in a Victorian train room. These are old train cars that have been turned into rooms. Several words of warning if you are planning to stay in one. The hot water heater is not very big so if you are planning to shower - one person might want to shower the night before and the other person the next day.

Also these cars are not soundproof - so just as you can hear the people outside talking as they walk past your car - they can also hear you. A case in point is my wife and I were lying in bed watching television and we kept hearing someone snoring - turned out it was someone in the next car.

While my wife and I did not care much for the Victorian railroad car rooms, we really liked the rooms in the hotel. We had an oversized room with a kingsize bed.

For a fun afternoon for the whole family, climb aboard the Downtown Arrow and take a ride on the South's largest operating historic railroad. The train winds it way through Chattanooga out to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, where visitors can see trains on display or grab a bite to eat in the station's restaurant before heading back to Chattanooga. The train departs from next to the Chattanooga Choo Choo every Saturday and Sunday at 12:21 p.m. The train ride is offered on additional days during the months of June - October.

A great way to get around the downtown area. Just park the car and ride. These electric shuttle buses run every ten minutes and make stops at the major hotels, shopping areas and attractions. The only drawback to the shuttle is they are not air-conditioned.
