Laid back in Maui

An April 2002 trip to Maui by merezy

I spent a relaxing week on a beautiful Hawaiian island.

Be sure to see the sunrise at Haleakala. It is spectacular! Dress warm though. Take the drive to Hana and take Dramamine if you get car sickness. Don't forget to snorkel and play a round of golf. Local plantations are worth a stop. View the sunset cliff diver in Lahaina.

Quick Tips:

Kaanapali has a rough ocean and narrow beach. Go to one of the local beaches along the main highway to enjoy a smooth ocean experience.

Best Way To Get Around:

Rent a car for sightseeing. Take drives and pack a lunch to eat on the beach.

Best Things Nearby:
The cute town of Lahaina is a short drive away and a good place to shop for souveniers, especially at Hilo Hatties.

Best Things About the Resort:
The resort is located right on the beach, has a gorgeous swimming pool with water slide, and offers a daily breakfast buffet and afternoon cocktail party.

Resort Experience:
We stayed in a lovely two-bedroom with a wrap-around balcony and ocean view. The rooms are spacious and finely furnished. The bedrooms are separated by the living area and provide privacy. The room accommodates 6 people easily with two on the hide-a-bed. There is a partial kitchen for quick snacks between swimming/tanning/playing at the pool. The surf is quite rough, so the pool will come in handy to cool off. The resort has a health club, spa, outdoor massage, restaurant, and even underground parking to keep your car cool.

Restaurant | "Bubba Gump's"

The whole Bubba Gump dining experience was quite fun. Make sure to put your feet in Forrest's shoes for a memorable "Life is like a box of chocolates" photo. The food was very good, lots of seafood, and the view was spectacular.

Attraction | "Drive to Hana"

The drive to Hana is a curvy one. Be prepared! The scenic drive is full of lush tropical plants and amazing views. The quaint town of Hana is the remnant of a much larger fishing village. Spend the day here and experience life as a fisherman.

Attraction

This is the nicest luau offered on Maui. The entertainment, food, and atmosphere rival none other. The Hawaiian cultural experience was very moving, especially for the guests invited up on stage.
