Maui Christmas 2002

A December 2002 trip to Lahaina by bgoshorn

Three weeks at the Kulean Club Maui with family and friends coming and going. A Christmas to remember and weather to brag about. Besides the normal tours around the island, four family members got scuba certified. Survival on a budget.

The Kuleana Club was just what we were looking for. It is only three stories high, so it is not crowded with people. Our unit was on the second floor, one bedroom unit with kitchen, bath, front room and lanai. The bedroom had queensize bed. A safe for valuables was in the closet. A fold-out Murphy bed was in the living room. The lanai was overlooking the ocean, garden and pool. From the deck we could see surfers, and both the islands of Lanai and Molokai.

We enjoyed the sunset nightly as the sun dropped over the island of Lanai. My wife and I slept in the living room on the Murphy bed and gave our guests the bedroom; not because we were that gracious, but because we enjoyed listening to the surf break on the shore and waking up to the view each morning. Since we were there three weeks, linen service was weekly on Thursday. If we needed extra towels during the week, we could exchange them at the office.

Best Things Nearby:
Many beaches within a mile. North there is a nice mini-mall with restaurant, dive shop, jewelry store, and McDonalds. South there are more beaches, a grocery store, small restaurants, and fast food joints.

Best Things About the Resort:
The view, the view, and the view. There aren't a lot of people. So you can enjoy the peace and quiet, and the view. There is a very nice, large swimming pool.

Resort Experience:
The Kuleana Club was just what we were looking for: It's only three-stories high, so it's not crowed with people. It's a great place to unwind and enjoy the island. Our unit was on the second floor; it was a one-bedroom unit with kitchen, bath, front room, and lanai. The bedroom had queen-size bed and had a safe for valuables in the closet. It's not air-conditioned, but we didn't need it as the trade winds blew through the unit and additional ceiling fans in the bedroom and living room were all we needed. There was a foldout Murphy bed in living room, and a lanai overlooking the ocean, garden, and pool; from the deck we could see surfers, and both islands of Lanai and Molokai. We enjoyed the sunset nightly as the sun dropped over the island of Lanai.

It was Christmas day and we were out for something to eat and then do some snokeling. The restaurant is upstairs and overlooks Front Street. The staff is great and the prices quite reasonable. The food is much better than Cheeseburgers in Paradise, across the street. It was just a great lunch!!!

South Pacific Dive School - Scuba Certification at a DiscountBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Scuba Certification at a Discount"

Four members of my family planned to get scuba certified. I checked the internet and found offered classes for small groups at half the price of the local dive shops.

Bill Digney (also know as the "Happy Leprechaun"), is the dive manager and master instuctor. He was our instructor. The reason the classes are less expensive is that he works out of his van and your classroom is right on the beach. This is perfect. He did a fantastic job and we all had a great time. He even came to our condo to give the final written test. That is real "Aloha" spirit.

Beaches with shadeBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

It can be very painful to try to get a tan in a week, or two, or three weeks. And I was not about to try. When I go to a beach area for a picnic and swimming, I want lots of shade.

A nice natural area is along the highway into Lahaina at Mile Marker 14 (+or- a mile in either direction). There are lots of trees, almost down to the water, which provide great places to hide from the sun and other people. The ocean is always calm and there are usually lots of fish to see in the sand channels between the coral heads.
