December in Yosemite

A December 2002 trip to Yosemite National Park by Seano

Quote: Yosemite may be the most beautiful place in America. I visited for the first time in winter, accompanied by friends who had been there in summer. For all of us, it was a brand new experience. My biggest piece of advice is to bring lots of film!

December in Yosemite

Overview

This may be the most beautiful place in America. See all that the Valley has to offer - El Capitan, Half Dome, the falls. Do not miss Yosemite Falls! Be open to seeing everything there is. A coyote came within inches of our car. On the way out, we passed a family of deer. Build in some time to just stare and absorb the natural beauty that surrounds you!Quick Tips: We stayed outside of the park at the Tenaya Lodge, which was a bit pricey but had a great location. We had planned a guided snow shoe walk in the morning, but it was cancelled due to weather, if you can imagine. It worked out because we explored a great deal of the park on our own. For location, the Tenaya is a great spot. Although it is located outside the south entrance to the park, it is not outside the park by much. The comfortable lobby couches and games add to the homey feel. One family asked us to take their photo with the tree in the background. I hope they use it as next year's Christmas card! The rooms are great. And after a long day in the cold outdoors, they offered exactly what was necessary - a warm bed a...Read More

Upon entering Yosemite, it does not take long to realize why the place had such a strong draw on creative people like Ansel Adams. The scenery is just breathtaking. I would recommend getting the requisite shots of Half Dome and El Capital. There is a great vantage spot right after the tunnel on your way down to the valley floor. However, photo ops abound in this place. For instance, our December trip followed closely on the heels of a decent snow storm. The branches of every deciduous tree were heavy with fresh snow. It felt like I was walking in a Christmas card. At night, the dwindling light plays tricks on some of the smaller trees as they take on almost-human forms of older husbands and wive...Read More
