Medieval Czechia Best of IgoUgo

Overview

Quote:
The castle is amazing. It's set above the town, and can be seen from almost anywhere in it. It's lit up at night, which makes it even more beautiful then.

Quick Tips:

If you are coming here in the summer, it's a good idea o book your hotel / hostel beforehand, as the beds here are in short supply in the high season.

Best Way To Get Around:

Getting here from Prague is easy - there's a train from Prague that takes between3.5 and 4.5 hours, depending on how long you have to wait for a connection at Ceske Budejovice.

Buses also come from Prague, and are faster and more expensive.

Hotel Ruze Best of IgoUgo

Hotel

Quote:
This hotel is a beautiful place to stay. It's set in an old Jesuit college, built in the 16th century. The rooms are elegant, and beautifully made, although a few are a bit shabby. It costs about £40 for a double room, incl. breakfast.

Vinarna U Satlavy Best of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Quote:
This is a rather ghoulish setting - the restaurant is housed in the medieval gaol! If you don't mind tucking in while in an ex-cell, this is the place to be. The food is terrific - they do great herby sausages and crispy chips with it. This isn't a great place to be veggie, though.

This is an exmaple of a baroque church that I like. (And there aren't many, I find them too elaborate.) The stonework here is beautiful, and there is a wonderful painting of virgin and child, near the alter.

Egon Schiele Museum Best of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Egon Schiele"

Quote:
This is a beautiful collection of work, by a local artist. (Local in the sense that he spent a few months here, but don't be too fussy about definitions.) The artist worked mostly with pencil, and quite a lot of watercolour, and the works are delicate and interesting.

The guided tours of the castle are good, I recommend them. You get to know a lot about the place that you wouldn't by going around alone. There are two main areas of the castle. The first is the medieval one, showing you the parts of the castle that were built in the 13th and 14th centuries. The best part of this is climbing the perfect round tower, which has great views over the town, but rather steep steps! The second group is the 18th and 19th century parts, decorated lavishly and laiden with painting and furniture. The ballroom is great - the decoration is a frieze of people at a ball! The drawing room is also a particularly fine sight.
