A November 2001 trip
to Nassau by DHBeaver
Quote: Bernard and I were anxiously awaiting our much-needed Bahamas vacation. The warm Nassau breezes gently serenaded us. From our balcony there was a magnificent view of the pool area and the seemingly endless Atlantic Ocean. Bahamas vacations are the best!
Cable Beach's main attractions include a straw market directly across from the hotels, a huge casino (within the Mariott Hotel), a 24-hour deli and, oh . . . yes, Johnny Canoe's Restaurant, which has great food at reasonable prices.
Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with live entertainment.
1. Mariott's Hotel and Casino and
2. Phil's Deli and sports bar
(within the Mariott Hotel);
3. King and Knights Club (for live
4. Johnny Canoe's Restaurant; (for great food at reasonable prices);
5. The Poop Deck Restaurant,
(delectable seafood dishes,
with a great view of the marina);
For the small fee of , you can take a scenic ride from your hotel (on Cable Beach), to downtown (Bay Street area). You pay upon leaving the bus. The locals are friendly and use the bus to travel to and from work during the day.
Feel free to use the ferry to Paradise Island and enjoy the flavor of the island:
1. Atlantis Hotel and Casino;
2. The Famous Cloisters built by Hunting Hartford (heir to Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company fortune);
3. The Shops on Bay Street, including the newly-rebuilt straw market;
4. Botanical Gardens;
5. The Zoo (Nightclub and Disco).
Stop into some of the lesser-known eateries; we found The Bahamian Kitchen for lunch, located off Bay St., downtown. The service is slow, but the food is well worth the wait.
A great eatery (a bit pricey, though) is The Poop Deck (on E. Bay St., at the Marina). They're open for lunch and their specialty--why seafood, of course!
My opinion on driving in the Bahamas--don't do it! Driving is on the left. The streets are quite narrow and very busy during the day. When venturing out at night, taxis are easy to find; best is to find one of the many accommodating drivers who will be happy to drop you off and pick you up, but be sure to agree upon the fare before boarding.
If you still insist on renting a car, then my suggestion is that you try to having it included in your travel package; if money is no object, there are several car rental agents at the airport.

Phil's Deli is great if you want a late-night snack or you wish to place a bet on your favorite team. There are numerous television screens and games of chance in this area.
