Fairfield Mountains/Lake Lure, NC, is a four season vacation spot. Whether you are fishing, boating, or swimming in the spring or summer; hiking or biking in the fall; special winters building snowmen, sledding, watching a roaring fire, squirrels scampering on a snowcovered balcony, soaking in a Jacuzzi, swimming in the indoor pool, soaking in the hot tub or sitting in the sauna, a personal massage, or exercising in the weight room . . . there is a wide variety of activities. Tennis, golf, mini-golf, whatever you choose, the weather is always perfect in the beautiful North Carolina mountains!

The best things to do while staying at Fairfield Mountains are right on the resort. We don't like to golf but folks say the golf course is a really good one. We bicycle, walk, and just enjoy the beautiful scenery. You can rent a boat or other water accessories. When the kids play on the beach, it's just like being at the ocean as the boat swells make waves crash the sand. There are picnic tables, grills, family games, indoor and outdoor swimming, hot tubs, sauna, and exercise equipment.

My little boy has always loved feeding the ducks on the lake. Favorite memories include getting my elderly mother in a jacuzzi for the first time and putting my infant in a pool ring in the jacuzzi in our condo.

Quick Tips:

You can easily drive up to Chimney Rock in a few minutes or over to Hendersonville for specialty shopping. It's just a short drive to Asheville for great shopping and the Biltmore House--Biltmore is great anytime of the year too!

The area has great food on site as well as wonderful restaurants in the area. You can cook in, order delivery right on the resort, grill out, picnic on the beach, go out for casual or fine dining a short drive away.

Best Way To Get Around:

We love to walk or ride bikes around the resort and to the restaurants. You could stay forever and never leave the resort for anything but if you do leave, you will need a car to get around on the wonderful, winding mountain roads.

Paul's ItalianBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

There is no need to drive all the way around to the town of Lake Lure or into Chimney Rock for good food. There are several really good restaurants in the resort, and Paul's is one of them. Paul's will deliver right to your condo or you can drive down (anywhere from a quarter mile to a mile depending on accommodations) and eat in the restaurant.

Eat anything Italian - but don't miss the pizza! It is great! They are open late, so a late night, hot pizza delivery is wonderful when you don't feel like going out after a busy, fun-filled day or on a cold winter night.

Attraction

The Bottomless Pools are an out of the way leisure spot for picnicking or hiking. There are picnic tables and bathrooms and even a small chapel on the grounds. The trail around to the bottomless pools is a beautiful, easy walk. There are some slippery spots, but it should be pretty easy for most adults and children. There are several pools, some small waterfalls, and lots of native woodland plants and wildlife with a small stream running throughout the property.

We don't golf, but these courses are described to be two superb, challenging, championship golf courses. Don't tell anyone I said so, but all I know is they made excellent areas for snowball fights, sledding, and building snowmen in the winter!

Chimney Rock ParkBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

If you like to hike, you should try Chimney Rock Park. This park celebrates over 100 years open to the public. There are some extreme climbs with amazing views stretching up to 75 miles. There is the Needle's Eye, which is a small opening to pass through. There are plateaus and deep crevasses to explore where you can look out over the town of Chimney Rock and Lake Lure for miles.

If you can hike to the waterfall (and back), it is beautiful! This huge waterfall is over 400 feet, and you can go all the way to the bottom of the falls and splash in the water if you are really brave.

Of course, a short hike up to the top of the chimney is a must-see spot overlooking the valley below. There are trails that are more dramatic and exhilarating, and some for families with children or the less adventurous.

If don't want to hike, you can drive up. There are picnic tables all along the way, and it's a scenic drive. When you get to the parking lot just below the chimney, you can take a 26-story elevator built inside the magnificent granite tower. This will take you on up to the top in about 30 seconds, where you will find a restaurant and shopping.

At different times throughout the year, special events are held there - the annual Chimney Rock Hill climb for sports cars, perhaps a bird show from the Raptor Center, or other wildlife displays. Scenes from this park were featured in the movie The Last of the Mohicans.

Attraction | "Lake Lure Cruise"

If you don't own a boat and do not feel comfortable driving a boat yourself, but you still would like to get out on the water for views you can't see any other way while you travel through Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, you can take a cruise on a large pontoon boat with other passengers for a guided tour. Life jackets are on board for all passengers. The guide will take you slowly around the lake, showing you the homes on the lake and describing how and when the lake was built and describing some of the homes. You will see the dam, the Lake Lure beach, Lake Lure marina, as well as several other spots of interest. You will see the area where the movie Dirty Dancing was filmed. Fishing tips will be shared as you glide past fishing boats, speed boats, skiers, canoes, paddle boats, swimmers, and residents of the lake.

With the wake from the boats on the lake, the beach at Fairfield Mountains is always splashing with waves. The swimming area is marked off and the beach is wide enough for sunbathing, relaxing in beach chairs, playing volleyball, letting children play, or watching the boats circle around. There is even a gazebo for weddings!

This can be the best part of a trip to Fairfield Mountains. You can rent the paddle boats or water bikes to just paddle around the beach area, or you can get a fishing license and go out for as long as you like anywhere on the lake and fish. A map is provided. Equipment is available at the marina as well.

My favorite is the pontoon boat where the whole family and friends can go out and spend an hour or more just crusing comfortably around the lake. It's a great way to get some sun, or you can sit under the canopy and just look at the scenery. Some of the homes are spectacular, and this is the only way to view them. The landscape of some of the homes is amazing. You can cruise down to the Dam Marina and go in for snacks and supplies, or you can cruise up to the beach at Lake Lure and take a look around.

Beautiful mountain scenery
This is a great place to put your own boat in the water or to rent a boat. You can rent a large pontoon or a speed boat for you and your family and friends, or just a small two-seater electric boat. Supplies and souvenirs are available. You can cruise the entire lake from this location, all the way back around to the resort.

This marina is located just across from the Lake Lure Recreation Center, and there is a children's playground, picnic areas, and fishing spots all the way around. The children enjoy feeding the ducks on or off the boat. Duck food is available to purchase.

If you like to canoe on calm waters, Lake Lure is an excellent place to go. You can rent a canoe at any local marina and spend as long as you like exploring the lake or fishing. A canoe will take you into spots that you cannot get to any other way.

You can fish right off the banks at the resort or take a boat out into the lake. The kids enjoy the water life, including tadpoles and salamanders. The lake is said to be the home of some very large catfish. You can stand on the boardwalk and feed the fish and get an idea of how big some of the catfish are!

Bubba's is a great shopping experience, a great part of the downtown charm of Chimney Rock. You can get penny candy and snacks and cold drinks that you don't see at most stores anymore. The proprietor is Bubba, a large golden lab! You will see his picture on the signs as well as on many featured items for sale in the store.

Many nice gift items are available featuring Bubba himself, Lake Lure, and Chimney Rock. The store is full of camping and outdoor supplies and there is an outdoor shop store adjacent to it with a wide variety of clothing and other items as well. This is a great place to find something unique. There are lots of gift ideas for the gardener, for the hiking enthusiast, or for collectors.

Biltmore EstateBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Biltmore Estates
While at Fairfield Mountains, don't miss the opportunity to see the Biltmore House and Gardens. Drive or take a resort tour. Biltmore is one of my favorite places.

America's largest home was created in 1895 as a grand country retreat for George W. Vanderbilt, his family, and guests. The house and grounds are spectacular; the 250-room French chateau is filled with beautiful and interesting sites (a library of over 20,000 books, sculptures, engravings, Renoir portraits, and grand furniture).

Take a self-guided tour, an audio tour, or a guided tour with a knowledgeable host who'll describe the architecture and history of the 4-acre estate, including its indoor swimming pool, recreation center, bowling alley, over 30 bathrooms, 40-plus unique bedrooms, over 60 fireplaces, and three kitchens! Furnishings include exquisite tapestries and art, and the rooms appear much as they did a century ago.

The estate is also a perfect place for holiday shopping--beautiful Christmas ornaments and decorative accessories. The Gardener's Place has everything needed for gardening and perfect gifts for a gardener. There are wide varieties of estate reproductions and unique items available. The Stable Cafe is a unique restaurant in the renovated Vanderbilt stable. The estate restaurants range from simple courtyard dining to elegant, and offer many specialties ranging from unique blends of fresh foods farmed on the estate and innovative menus featuring fanciful desserts, to drinks for casual or fine dining, a confectionery for decadent treats, a bakery, and ice cream parlor.

The winery is a neat experience, with wine-tasting and cooking demonstrations. There are gorgeous gardens and a conservatory with hummingbirds in flight in spring, beautiful roses in summer, and amazing orchids.

The house is truly beautiful at Christmas, my favorite time of year. There’s a majestic 35-foot tree in the banquet hall, dozens of trees decorated according to fairytale themes, delicate ornaments, hundreds of wreaths, poinsettias, lights, nativity scenes, choir ensembles, and music from the magnificent pipe organ. We are annual pass-holders so we don't miss any occasion!

A luxury inn on the property provides a little pampering or a place for a special wedding. A visit to the huge bass pond down a woodland path and guided hikes give you an opportunity to learn about the estate farms and surrounding forest. Several behind-the-scenes tours include a vineyard tour, motor-coach tour, and carriage rides. Don't miss the rooftop tour for unsurpassed views! You can view several additional rooms, the attic, and architectural details of the house and rooftop.

Special festivals throughout the year include a springtime flower festival, an Easter egg hunt, summer concerts, and Michaelmas--an autumn English harvest festival.

Ride great biking trails with rental mountain bikes or bring your own. There are equestrian trails, as well, if you like horseback riding (riding lessons are also available). Try canoeing, kayaking, or river rafting down the French Broad River or a romantic interlude with a guided sunset float and picnic basket from the Ice Cream Parlor.
