New Year's in Steamboat Springs

A January 2003 trip to Steamboat Springs by FredL

Our son persuaded us to take a skiing vacation to Steamboat Springs. This is a "must ski" location! After skiing, go to town, which is all of two minutes from Leisure Resorts Hilltop, and have dinner. Go early to Steamboat Smokehouse.

Steamboat Springs
Things to do in the winter: skiing, skiing, and skiing. The best part of the trip was skiing at Steamboat Springs .
Visit Steamboat Springs.Oh yeah, there’s snowmobile and horse riding, visiting the spas, shopping in wonderful shops, great restaurants, and some of the best scenery around. Bring lots of film.

From spring through the fall, hiking, biking, hot air balloons and, my favorite, fly fishing, is the thing to do. There are several fly fishing shops – visit Steamboat Fishing Company, and the Orvis endorsed shop at Bucking Rainbow . Both locations provide guide service year round, for those who like winter fly fishing for trout.

Quick Tips:

We flew in to Denver, approximately 180 miles to Steamboat. We rented an SUV and headed for the Rockies. We took the scenic route (I70W to 40N) over the Continental Divide. Absolutely a breath-taking ride. We took two rolls of pictures just on the drive!

Best Way To Get Around:

There is a free bus to take you from town to the mountain, and back. Many resorts provide free shuttle service.

This is a nice place to stay. It has an indoor heated pool and spa, resturant and bar. There are typical spacious rooms and a kitchen area, nicely furnished. The resort provides a free 10 minute shuttle ride (Ray is the driver - great guy, knows the area) to the mountain for skiing. The shuttle is provided until 10 pm. After skiing, hop a ride to shop or eat. When in town, give a call and they will pick you up and bring you back "home".

This is the best breakfast place! The blueberry pancakes are quite large, 2 are more than plenty. They have great egg dishes and freshly ground flavor coffees. Get there early (before 9:30 am) or you might need to wait.

Great. Go early. If you have to wait, have a bath tub size margarita and a free bucket of peanuts (no kidding). Don't worry about the shells, there's lots of floor space.

Don't worry about the dress, go as you are. Oh yeah, the food is Texas style BBQ. It's great! This is a relaxed atmosphere, can be very busy, but friendly and a good place to go to after skiing for some great meat!
