We were spending Christmas somewhere in Europe this year, living as expats. We had read and heard that Vienna was an ideal spot at Christmastime, and so that became our chosen destination!

Walking the Ringstrasse, one can see many amazing buildings, and museums, and the Opera House. There are plenty of places to stop for a coffee or meal. People are helpful, and prices are reasonable.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

We enjoy walking as much as possible, and Vienna has many places within easy walking distance. There are horse-drawn carriages, if one enjoys that sort of thing, and taxis, trains, buses, and streetcars. Whatever mode of transportation you wish, it's available.

Attraction | "Belvedere Palace"

Belvedere Palace
While we were there, Belvedere Palace had a wonderful exhibition of Gustav Klimt's works. It was quite interesting, and they offered much information along with the paintings. There is a gift shop and a cafe, but when we were there, it was far too crowded to enjoy either. The view of the city from the wonderful grounds are almost as amazing as the art within!

Spanish Riding School
The Royal Lipizzaner Horses are housed in winter at the Spanish Riding School complex. If you have good timing, you may be able to purchase tickets to view their morning exercises or, as we were able to do, view their final rehearsal for an upcoming performance. This was a highlight of our visit to Vienna. If you can take photographs without flash (or non-flash video), you are allowed to capture some of this loveliness on film! It was a memorable experience.

Attraction | "Christmas Market"

Rathauspark
The Christmas markets in Vienna are part of the ambience of the Christmas season here. Rathauspark is fully decorated with lights and music, and even a little train to visit all the sites there! There are food stands and drink stands, where you must try the Gluwein. It is a warm spiced wine that helps thaw the fingers and toes!
