Our two-year-old is loves to travel as much as his parents! But off-season travel can be daunting, especially when liquid sunshine (a.k.a. rain!) is the prevailing weather pattern. We were creative and found some activities just up our alley! The Windjammer Condominiums are located conveniently between the local Cineplex and the public library. The local library offers cards to anyone with photo id. Make sure you look for the library cat, Trixie! She spent an hour sleeping under the children's corner table while my son played on top! Great cat. The library also loans a nice selection of video tapes (contemporary and children's varieties) and has two internet access computers for checking email on the fly. The movie theatre is locally owned and operated. There are three screens playing 3-4 movies. Prices are reasonable - for the matinee and for shows after 6 p.m. (12/28/02-1/04/03) There are also 3 family fun centers, 2 mini golf courses and several rental scooter and bike vendors. We spent one day after the storms driving north to see the flooding! Not a normal occurrence, but the high wind, high tides and unusual rain fall made for a weather spectacle.

Quick Tips:

Take an afternoon and drive north on State Highway 109 to the rainforest. Don't miss the sign "12 feet of rain per year." Yes, FEET!

On your way be sure to stop for a FANTASTIC meal at the Ocean Crest Inn for lunch. The kids meal was unlike any I have ever seen before - sauteed veggies and real chicken breast strips! No deep fried nastiness here! Lunch averaged per person, for a kids plate. I'm sure dinner would be outstanding too, but starting at per plate was overly ambitious dining atmosphere with a two-year-old. Company manners only go so far.

The pharmacy in Ocean Shores sells toys and beach goodies in addition to pharmacy items. But the best part is the wooden train table filled with Thomas the Tank Engine trains. We spent a good half hour playing!

Best Way To Get Around:

If you stay at the Windjammer, it takes longer to buckle up and make 2 left turns than to walk next door to the movie theatre.

All beaches are considered state or local highway with a speed limit of 25 and seatbelts are required. It's heavily patrolled! Be careful driving on the beach -- sneaker waves can come in over 75 feet past the current tide line!
