Two nights in Weehawken (where?) New Jersey

Overview

Quote:
Our hotel (see journal entry on accommodations) had a gorgeous view of the New York City Skyline, which in itself was a highlight of our stay. The Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island are within 15 minutes and driving to New York City via the Lincoln Tunnel was approximately 10 minutes from our hotel. Because of limited time we only visited the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island and the Empire State Building. New York City has so much to do - Central Park, Empire State Building, Broadway, a zoo, etc. that you would probably need a week or more to see everything. Quick Tips: If you want to experience a beautiful sunrise and sunset from your hotel room, I would recommend staying at the Sherato...Read More

Upon entering the hotel lobby to check-in, our first impression was that this was an average hotel - it''s not too fancy. Our check-in went smoothly and the staff was very pleasant. Because we are Starwood Preferred Guest members () we were given a 6th floor room with a river view. The hotel has 10 floors and 6 to 8 are Starwood preferred rooms and 9 to 10 are club level rooms (more expensive). Our room was a suite (all rooms here are) which consisted of a king size bed (comfortable) and a sleeper sofa (fairly comfortable). The room had a microwave oven, refrigerator, wet bar, some dishes, and a coffee maker in the "kitchen" area. Our suite also featured 2 telev...Read More

One of the restaurants we dined in during our stay in Weehawken was the Chart House (here's their website). If you're looking for great food and a FANTASTIC VIEW OF NY CITY, then I would highly recommend this restaurant. The Chart House is an upscale chain seafood restaurant. The restaurants are mostly located on the West Coast, Northeast U.S., and Florida. We have eaten at several different Chart House restaurants during the past 10 years and have never had less than a great meal. The menu consists mostly of many different seafood entrees including several different types of fish, scallops, coconut crunch shrimp, scampi, lobster tail, crab cakes, ...Read More

Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are only accessible via ferry either from Battery Park in Manhattan, NY, or Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ. If you plan to enter from the New York side, public transportation to Battery Park is highly recommended as parking is EXTREMELY LIMITED AND VERY EXPENSIVE. We entered from the New Jersey side and found plenty of parking at a resonable rate (I believe $5.00 for several hours). If you enter from the New Jersey side it is located off of Exit 14-B of the New Jersey Turnpike. Signs will lead you to the park from this exit. Both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are National Park Sites but no entrance fee is charged. You do, however have to pay ...Read More

The Statue of Liberty was the second stop of our Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty "tour". SEE THE ELLIS ISLAND JOURNAL ENTRY FOR INFO ON THE LOCATION AND FERRY INFO. Unfortunately, only the grounds are open for visitation (Hours 9:30am-5:15pm - longer during summer months). For security reasons the Monument, Museum, Crown, and all Monument Observation Decks are closed indefinitely. There are ranger guided talks/tours of the grounds, however. There is also a nice gift shop and you get wonderful views of the NY City Skyline from the Island. The Statue, located in the NY Harbor, was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the U.S.A. The Statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886 and ...Read More

A visit into NY City is not complete without a stop at the Empire State Building. The view from the 86th floor promenade is absolutely AWESOME. You can see for miles from this spot, and it is a totally EXHILERATING feeling to be that high (1050 FEET) above the city. If you want to learn about the Empire State Building while taking in this STUNNING view, you can rent an audio tour that details the history of the building and info about the sights visible from it. The Empire State Building is a major national landmark, and the lines to obtain tickets reflect this. During the "off-season" you can wait 1 1/2 hours to buy tickets and get on the elevator (you wait in line to buy tickets, and th...Read More
