Nassau for 1

A November 2002 trip to Nassau by CarolineJulia

I always take a 2 week chill out break on my own every year - this was the best yet!

Overview

The laid-back atmosphere and the friendliness of the locals, together with feeling totally safe travelling around on my own, made this my best chill out break ever.

An absolute must do is the Powerboat Adventures trip - a fantastic combination of thrill, nature, and relaxing (of course, unlimited booze helps!!).

Also don't miss Stuart Coves snorkeling trips - especially snorkeling with sharks. Dolphin Encounter is not as "rip off" as it sounds - you really do get to ineract with these fascinating mammals.

Do make sure you walk around Nassau itself - the pastel coloured buildings make for some great pictures. It's quite a hike to the water tower, but the view more than makes up for it.

Quick Tips:

Take a good insect repellant / antiseptic cream - the sand fleas pack one hell of a bite!

Shop around if buying jewellery - some of the shops add on insurance which makes your bargain diamonds not such a bargain after all. I found some of the best designs and prices at the Crystal Palace Hotel.

Single women will attract a lot of attention from the Bahamian men, especially if you're blonde - I always found them to be most gracious and charming, and a polite "no" coupled with a smile and a wave always seemed to work at fending them off!

Best Way To Get Around:

If you're staying in Cable Beach, take the local bus into Nassau for - they're very frequent, though you may find yourself sitting on a local's knee if it's crowded!!

Best Things Nearby:
Set right on the beach, several restaurants are within walking distance, with a casino on site.

Best Things About the Resort:
They have a friendly staff, good range of activities, several dining options. There's loads & loads of sun loungers by the pool & on the beach.

Resort Experience:
The Crystal Palace has recently changed hands & is now owned by Wyndhams. My room was large & came complete with TV, mini bar, hairdryer, toiletries, etc., but the best thing was the stunning view across the beach & ocean. The room was always clean, but definitely in need of re-painting, especially the bathroom & balcony area. In fact the whole resort could have done with a lick of paint - I put this down to the fact it had recently changed hands. The beach & pool area were well equipped with sun loungers, although again some were well past their prime & there were occasions when the beach badly needed litter patrol. I was there in November & the sun left the pool area by about 2pm & the beach by 3.30pm

The decor is worth the visit alone - a star scape on the ceiling & junkanoo masks & photos of "old" Nassau on the walls. A great selection of food from local specialities like conch fritters to huge burgers & fries, with salads for those watching their weight. Their cocktails are huge & the guava duff is to die for. There's a junkanoo parade every Friday night.
