Rainy day in Brugge

An October 1999 trip to Bruges by Kathy

We took the train from Brussels to Bruge and stayed overnight. You could do this as a day trip but then you wouldnt see the square lit up at night. This is a wonderful city and well worth the short train trip. We really enjoyed staying overnite, so we could have a nice dinner and see the square lit up at night and not have to rush back to Brussels. But even if you didn't have the time to stay overnite I would do it as a day trip. There are lots of nice shops here.

When you get there take the 1 hour bus tour. This picks up at the main square. This gives you a very good layout of the city.
The shopping was very wonderful there since it was cold and rainy and not much else exciting to do.

Quick Tips:

The train from Brussels to Bruge takes one hour and the cost for 2 people round trip was 1260.00 Bel Francs. We then took a bus to the hotel. The streets are very confusing you really need a street map.

Best Way To Get Around:

Walk
Hotel de Pauw

This is a rather small hotel. The room wasn't ready when we got there but they held our bags and we checked in later. The owner was very friendly and we had a fully cooked breakfast included in the price.

Restaurant | "Any of the restaurants on the main square"

All the restaurants on the main square have menus posted in front so you can get an idea of price and what they have. Since we were there in October and it was cold, they did have tables outside and had heaters going with tarps over the outside tables. It was very cozy and still fun to sit outside. Most places have onion soup and all different types of food. French, seafood etc.

Main Square
The main square here is really one of the nicest I have seen. It is more spectacular than Brussels, and at night it is beautiful.

There are lots and lots of shops in Brugge. The first day we were there it was raining so we shopped at lot.

As it was raining that day, this was great way to see the city and find out about things going on. We enjoyed it a lot and found places we wouldn't have other wise

Shopping in BruggeBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

Since the day we got there it was cold and rainy we decided to shop. There are so many shops there we were busy all day with a break to have a nice Belgian beer on the square.

There are tons of shoe shops and my husband got a nice fleece top which he needed since it was cold. There were also tons of wonderful chocolate shops of course. We both bought some nice looking cheap shoes but they fell apart after we wore them twice. So maybe don''t buy the shoes or the cheap ones anyway.

Most all the shops are on any of the side streets off the main square, just walk and explore.
