China Off the tourist path

An April 2002 trip to Guangzhou by Liken D Sun

We went to visit my parents who were teaching English in Guangzhou for a year. It was quite an experience seeing China outside the tour group sites.

Some of the local restaurants were quite an experience. While most were not extremely clean they had great food, good beer, and a price you couldn't beat ( would feed ten a meal including beer). The massage parlors were good too.

Quick Tips:

Get off the tourist path!

Best Way To Get Around:

Taxis, just make sure to take written directions for where you are going as well as learning to say the name of where you are going.

Restaurant

This was a small local restaurant built out of an old garage. Half the tables were inside and half outside. The beer was great and real cheap and the food was excellent - local food at a very good price. Believe it or not, the french fries here were really good! This place is completely a local restaurant, it has plastic tables and chairs, is not all that clean, serves food that only the locals serve (Chinese, not designed for tourists). Having said this and painted a pretty bad picture of the place, the food was excellent!

Attraction

The fabric market is a four story mall of tint booths where you could get anything at a very reasonable price. If you were willing to come back the next day they would make clothes for you at a very reasonable price.
