Time out in Trinidad

A September 2002 trip to Trinidad by Helen Mary Flynn

If you want to chill out after Havana, catch the Via Azul bus to Trinidad for about $25, meet laid-back people, visit great beaches, ride on a 1907 steam train to a former sugar plantation, and swim in a clear mountain lake.

Go to the Sol Y Son restaurant for a romantic meal. Take the 1907 steam train to the former sugar plantations, leaves at 9:30am each day (check at Tourist office to confirm it's running). Get a taxi to enjoy the beaches in Playa Ancon (approx. each way-arrange for taxi driver to return for you at an agreed time). Use hotel's swimming pool for free (buy a drink to avoid problems).

Quick Tips:

Visit the handicrafts market near Plaza Mayor for unusual gifts and well-made lace tablecloths etc. Have an evening beer in the patio in the Hotel Ronda.

Best Way To Get Around:

Buses are non-existent in Trinidad (except the Via Azul buses that connect with Havana and Santa Clara) ask your hotel or owners of your Casa Particular to organise a taxi for you, to go to the beach or the mountains. The train station is only operational for the once-daily steam train to the former sugar plantation and back.
