A December 2002 trip to Luxembourg by jrheimbach

Quote: My brother-in-law had business meetings in Luxembourg, so my wife and I accompanied him as an opportunity to visit this part of Europe. We only had two days for sightseeing. Fortunately, my brother-in-law’s friends in Luxembourg shared with us their suggestions so that we could do as much as possible.

Scattered throughout Luxembourg are sites dedicated to the U.S. military from World War II. We took the back highways from Germany into Diekirch and did not see any memorials or tanks along that route. The military museum in Diekirch was closed on Mondays, so we missed the opportunity to see anything. We’ll plan better for our next trip so we can visit these sites. Unknowingly, we timed our arrival in Diekirch at the same time as Saint Nicholas, getting the unexpected pleasure of participating in this annual custom, so different from our Santa Claus. The food and wine in Luxembourg are excellent. One person told us that Luxembourg has the better "side" of the grape-producing valley, ...Read More

We arrived in Esch-sur-Alzette planning to find a hotel room, as we did not have reservations for that night. We drove to the city center, quickly realizing that parking options were minimal. In order to find a hotel, we would have to drive around and scan for any possibilities. We spent the next 30 minutes meandering through the city streets, realizing that either hotels were not easy to recognize or there just were not very many near the center of the city. The one hotel close to city hall did not have any available rooms for that Monday night, but that was okay, as this place was a bit pricey for just a quick overnight stay. My brother-in-law’s business associate offered to help us find accom...Read More

The Star Hotel should have been directly across the street from Diekirch city square. We stopped in a small bar to get directions and a beer, discovering the hotel was just around the corner. Walking a full block more than we had been instructed, we could not find the hotel. Maybe we should have skipped the beer. We retraced our steps back to the edge of the city square. Looking around, we finally noticed the small sign for the Star Hotel in between all the scaffolding. The exterior of the building was under construction, hiding all indications that this was a hotel. Now that we located the hotel, we moved our car from the city parking lot to one of the five slots available at the hotel. No one ...Read More

My umbrella protected me from the light rain as we stopped at the Victor Hugo statue on the far side of the bridge in downtown Vienden. My wife pulled her woolen scarf over her head, walking at a slower pace. She stopped several times on the bridge, looking back at the statue absorbing the view of rain softly falling on the river in this quiet community. Crossing the bridge, we found a quaint restaurant that was open and inviting. Only two other groups of people were dining when we entered the restaurant, giving us our selection of tables. We chose a booth over in the corner, close to the fireplace, where we had a great view out the front window of the ...Read More

Visit from Saint Nicholas

"Oomph-a, Oomph-a," the band played, announcing the start of the celebration in the Diekirch city square. We had just arrived in town and were still trying to locate our hotel when we heard the music. We sped up our walking pace as to not miss whatever might be happening. Finding the hotel would wait until later. We rounded the corner to see a group of small children leading a parade. Dressed in blue and yellow robes with tall blue hats, they walked in two neat rows. A small cart pulled by donkeys immediately followed, surrounded by teenage girls dressed in white gowns adorned with gold stars. In the center of the carriage was Saint Nicholas! We arrived just in time for the annual arrival of thi...Read More

We drove the short distance (about 20km) to Vianden from Diekirch, arriving after dark. We rounded the bend just outside of Vianden, and high up on a hill, impressively lit in the night sky, was the Château de Vianden. "Oh my gosh. Look at that," I exclaimed when I saw this magnificent castle. "Do you think it’s still open for tours?" We drove through the city, upwards to the castle. To my disappointment, visiting hours were over and the castle would not open again until the following day. The castle is open for tours every day of the year except January 1, November 2, and December 25. During the months of March through October, the hours are 10am to 5pm. For the months of November through the ...Read More
