Find the edges in Berlin

A travel journal to Berlin by LBN

Berlin is the kind of town in which one can either get completely lost or enjoy oneself immensely. Constantly changing, you get the feeling in Berlin that you're watching the development of an adolescent city. There's something for everyone, from history-mongers to clubgoers to art freaks.

Every quarter in Berlin has something to offer, so decide what you're looking for. Are you looking for good multicultural centers? new art galleries? historical monuments? cutting edge music? Go from there.

Quick Tips:

A good place to start is at the tourist center a few blocks from the Zoological Gardens train (and underground) stop. This is an exceptionally large tourist center, and besides being filled with every kind of travel book you might be looking for, will offer you lots of help on last minute tickets for shows, tours, etc.

Best Way To Get Around:

Public transportation is really not that hard to figure out. There is a big ring covered by most S-Bahn trains, and these stops are connected in the middle by U-Bahn trains. You should buy a ticket before you board the train (from the machines located around the train station). If you don't get caught without one, you ride free. If you do, it's 30 Euros fee. Take your pick (and remember, MANY people speak English in Berlin so "I don't understand" probably won't help you).

Restaurant

This cafe offers an excellent Sunday brunch. For 8.50 you can eat as much as you want, from a selection of breads, cheeses, meats, egg dishes, tomato dishes (I won't even try to list it all). Go in the morning, order a few coffees, stay all afternoon, chat, people-watch. The best way, in my opinion, to spend a Sunday morning in Berlin.

Restaurant | "Best Falafel in Germany "

If you are looking for some cheap, REALLY good falafel, come here. You can eat inside or take it away; it's cheap; it's amazing. Get off at the Winterfeldplatz stop and look for a little Turkish fast food restaurant.

Attraction | "Tips on going out in Berlin"

The nightlife scene in Berlin is constantly changing. Most of what''s happening is in former East Berlin, so that''s a good place to start. There is ALWAYS something going on, but if you want to find the place to be, you''re going to have to ask around. Clubs where a famous DJ played last week are not necessarily good this week. Check out the periodicals "Zitty" and "Tipp" for a listing of what''s happening (available at any bookstore or news agency), and then ASK. Whatever you''re looking for: live jazz, good trance, gay and lesbian (best periodical to look for is called "Siegessaeule", a monthly), even swingers clubs and live sex on stage, you can find it, but don''t go just by the book.

Popular/famous venues: the KitKatKlub is an extremely famous club, whether from the musical Cabaret or its contemporary shenanigans. If shenanigans are what you''re looking for, the KitKatKlub is where you will find them. "Darkrooms" in the back (don''t even ask), gay and straight and anything else you might think of. I haven''t actually been to this one, but I''ve been told just-spectactors are not so cool with the crowd, so know that before you go.

Casino is right next to Ostgut, which just closed down, I think. Casino has been/is? home to DJs like Paul van Dyk and can be quite good, but catch it on a bad night and it''s not worth the entry fee. Mostly straight crowd. Right next to the Ostbahnhof.
