Quote: I've been to the Bay of Plenty, on the East coast of the North Island, a number of times, and never get bored of it. Whether you want a lazy weekend to get away from it all, or an action-packed few days, the Bay of Plenty has it all.

Bay of Plenty - the Plentiful Place!!

Overview

Go to White Island - it's a must!!! You can take a scenic flight over it, or go across by boat and actually walk on it. Whatever you prefer, just make sure you do it - it's awesome!! I really enjoyed white water rafting on the Wairoa river - even though we capsized, and I was scared at the time, looking back, I'd have hated to miss out on the experience. Climbing Mount Maunganui is another "must-do" for the area. The walk to the top is hard, but the views of the Bay are spectacular.Quick Tips: If you want to take a boat to White Island, book the day before - it might sound like you just "pop over there", but in reality, just about all boat trips are an all-day event, starting f...Read More

If adventure is your thing, you can always have a go at white water rafting, and River Rats has plenty of trips on offer in both the Tauranga and Rotorua area. We went for the Grade 5 trip on the Wairoa river; starting near the hydro station, this ride only happens 26 times a year, when the station opens it's dams, releasing a surge of water definately only fit for waterbabes! We met at the River Rats base, and got kitted out with wetsuits, life jackets, helmets, booties, etc, and then jumped into the River Rats coach to take us to the start of the trip. After making our way down the slippery banks, we all got into our rafts and made our way out into the (presently) calm wat...Read More

White Island Scenic Flight

There are two ways you can choose to "do" White Island. You can either take a boat out there and land to have a walk around, or you can take a scenic flight. We had originally planned to go for the former, but on the day, the sea was too rough to sail, so after a quick phone call made by the helpful lady in Whakatane Tourist Information Office, we found a pilot to take us out. We got to the airport and met up with the pilot, and got straight into the 3-seater Cessna. The take-off was bumpy, to say the least, but once in the air, the pilot started his narrative as we headed out towards the open sea. We flew over Whale Island, which is a reserve closely monitored by the Department of Co...Read More

Mount Maunganui

There's a lot to keep you amused in this seaside town. Just about everyone who visits here can't resist the walk up to the summit of the Mount, it really is a "must-do". There are varying degrees of walks up the Mount, one that spirals up the Mount, which is a very gentle walk all the way, apart from the last twenty minutes or so, when there is no escaping the sharp incline to the summit. To walk up this path takes about an hour and a half at a leisurely pace. Or, you can brace yourself and go for the "quick way" which is straight up the side of the Mount - not good for the unfit, this walk is much harder, with steep inclines all the way up, and in the few places that there are steps, these are...Read More

Waimarino Adventure Park

It's hard to categorise Waimarino, the only classification of it that I can make is that it's excellent value for money. We paid just $25 to spend the day there, and for that, we could have unlimited kayak use on the river, and unlimited use of all the other activities in the park. Amongst other things, there is a climbing wall, trampoline, hot pools, tight-rope walk, and scramble nets. We spent a couple of hours kayaking up and down the river, which was an easy paddle, and quite relaxing, and the rest of the time playing on the other equipment. If the weather is warm, there are a couple of slides landing in the river, or you and a friend can have a go on the gladiator-style wrestling poles whi...Read More
