San Francisco Overnight

Overview

Quote:
The Exploratorium is a must-see if you have a child or feel like one. Perfect for the would be scientist or those just curious about the world and how it works.

The million-dollar-view from Coit Tower costs only a fraction of that to see if you get a clear San Francisco day. We did.

Something about Chinatown is a draw for children. Personally, I love the bakeries where you can get dim sum (Chinese appetizers) for less than 50 cents each. Street food at its best.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Take at least one trip on the cablecar for the thrill of it but walking is the best way to see all kinds of sights.

The spacious room at this hotel contained not only a king sized bed but a couch with pull-out bed, a stuffed chair, small desk, bookcase with interesting reading, a bench, an amoire with honor bar and remote TV, a small built-in seating area and a small closet. The room was long and thin but that was fine. The bed was comfy, the sheets felt like cotton and the blankets were adequate. They stock Aveda bath products in the standard hotel bathroom. The towels were plush and nice. There was absolutely no view from our room (316) but most likely that accounted for the incredible sleep that I got there. Usually San Francisco hotels are noisy just because they are in the city. This is the quietest room I hav...Read More

Coit Tower

My son and I had seen Coit Tower previously when we walked from Fisherman's Wharf to North Beach. We thought that we could just walk up some steep hill and be there. What a walk that would have been. We drove up this time but not all the way to the top. There are some parking places about halfway up and it's a nice walk the rest of the way. Or if you aren't there in the thick of tourist season - June to October- you can find parking right in front. The tower was built with a donation from Lillian Coit who supported the firefighters of San Francisco. You must pay to get to the top of the tower but the fee is less than $5 for adults and half that for kids. If it is a clear day, you've got a ...Read More

Exploratorium at The Palace of Fine Arts

I'm not sure about the price since I joined the museum as a member. You get free admission to other science museums, free admission to the Exploratorium all year and a percentage off in the gift shop. This place is great if you have all day and lots of patience. Try to go during the week as opposed to weekends or on a Wednesday afternoon and stay until they close at 9 p.m. They have some changing exhibits but many are there all the time. The shadow box is fun as you can look like you are flying. It's more fun to see this museum with at least one other person as some things are set up for 2 people. Check out the indented seating area on the upper floor where you can speak to the person across the r...Read More
