We stayed at the Rockhouse Hotel in Negril, recently renovated by Australian owners. Of all the places we visited, this was by far the best. The Rockhouse is a very hip, modern, colorful, rustic-like resort on the West End of Negril with extremely friendly staff and a relatively small number of guests. High recommendation for this place - it made this trip worth it.Quick Tips:
Negril is a difficult town to explore, as it is set up along its "famous 7-mile beach" and has no real center. If you are looking for a place to spread your towel (or drop a beach chair; provided by most hotels) and hop between the water and the sand all day long, this is your destination. HOWEVER, I would never recommend Jamaica for gay tourists (especially couples; even if you plan to "look straight" for the trip).
Also know that you will be offered grass by probably almost everyone you come in contact with.
Tips:
1) If you want dealers to leave you alone, tell them you absolutely don't smoke. You will be particularly harassed at the airport, as they know you have no prices of comparison.
2) If it is low season, the hotels will NOT be full. Wait till you see the hotel to book, especially if you're planning to stay long.
Best Way To Get Around:
Taxis are the only/the best way to get around. If you are a tourist, they will definitely try to rip you off. Negotiate the price before you get in the car. Also be aware that all "official" taxis (white cars marked as taxis; almost every car is a taxi in Negril) can be used either as collective taxis or charter taxis. Collective taxis will pick up other passengers along the way, and cost I think 60 cents per passenger, no matter where in Negril you are going. Charter taxis will charge you up to 15 Jamaican dollars, if not more. As a tourist, they will assume you want to charter the taxi and that you don't know you don't have to. Read Less
